Mottos, philosophies of life?

What are your pithy statements, lessons learned, or words of wisdom you choose to live by?

The key to life is how you handle Plan B.

Everything in moderation, including moderation (sometimes you have to be extreme).

Feeling like life isn't worth it? Go make a kid laugh.

"philosophies of life?"

For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.

He [Jesus] must increase, I must decrease.

My Mom likes to write poetry. But, her favorite by Grellet.

I shall pass through this world
but once.
If therefore, there be any kindness
I can show,
Or any good I can do,
Let me do it now.
Let me not defer from it.'
For I shall not pass this way again.
Grellet.

( Not that I abide by that command all that well. I think My mom pretty much does tho.
Other. commandments.

Fighting is the best thing a man can have in his soul.

To be a success in this world, you don't need to know everything, just where to look for the answer; a fool who knows where to look is wiser than one who refuses to solicit information from others.

Life is worth doing, and anything worth doing can be difficult and sometimes outright unpleasant.

Sometimes life may leave you in the middle of the road, defeated and hurt....defeat is not losing. Defeat is merely a realization of something that needs to be done to win. Dust yourself off, and keep on marching. One only loses if they refuse to get back up.

The food chain is only as relevant as the specific animal you are looking at....a cat can turn a dog into dinner if it's mean/smart enough. Same can be said for the business world...some people advance through superior performance, others through sheer ferocity or sneakiness.

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.

Funny, I just said that to someone yesterday.

Some sayings that have stuck with me are from song lyrics:

"They can offer you anything at all, but your dreams must not be sold." - The Alarm

And in more cynical moments, "Don't let the bastards grind you down." - U2

"I like big butts and I can not lie..." - Sir Mix-A-Lot

I just posted my favorite in Gear Jammer's thread ironically. My grandfather would call life's problems "rocks in your row to hoe" and would say some have "bigger rocks than others". It always brought peace to me - not sure why.

When I wonder if I should try something and think, "I don't know, that's pretty scary," I perform a quick mental calculation and usually come to the conclusion, "I probably won't die." That's kind of become my motto.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
