General Cycling Discussion - What do u think about this used bike?

This post was posted in road cycling, but I changed my mind, because I think I would get more respones here.

Well, i'm looking at this cheap road bike, and what do you guys think? I'm not sure if it WORKS but it says GOOD CONDITION.

With the shifters being were they are and the cost of the winning bid and shipping I'd say its not worth it. I'd look for something at least with downtube shifters ...in my humble opinion anyway:D

Ohh..so the downshift shifters are the biggest no-no on this? That's what another person told me. But I figure, if it's $10 CND and i live within the same are approximately..hmm...

Check out your local thrift shop also for used bikes. There you could examine the bike closely and even do test ride. Where I live, you could pick up used bikes from $15-25; brands I've seen are Nishiki, Miyata, Schwinn, Diamond Back, Specialized, Univega, and of course Huffy and Roadmaster.

Almost any bike is worth $10.00 even for parts alone. Remember that you will have to pay shipping which will cost about $45 or more depending on how far away you are from the seller.

I think the advise to look at thrift stores is a good one, unless you live so remote that you do not have access to a good supply of used bikes.

Yup, but i forgot to add, i live in the area. No way i would ship a bike. I just saw that it's extremely cheap, that's why. And plus it's only $10 CDN.

i'm sure you could find some use for it. give it to a friend who cant afford one or something.. i dunno.

I see a rear derailleur but can't make out a front derailleur, unless it is painted
green. Looks like lowend steel frame, cut above Walmart bike of the era. Has to be at least 20yrs old. IF IF available for $10-20 and and you have a use for it, the bike may be a good deal. Will need tear down and lube, new brake pads, possible cables, chain. If chain then you may need a new freewheel. Availability of these is limited, but they can be found. Can't be entirely sure cranks aren't cottered. Photo has its limits. Steve

It looks like a low-end steel frame with low-end cotterless cranks, from the late 1970s. According to the picture, there is no front derailleur, so you'll have to shift chainrings the way they did in the bad old days, ca. 1930. Assuming it fits you properly (important!) and that you want a general transportation/beater bike, at this price, go for it.

I don't think their is a front derailleur as well. The problem is it's an auction, and if i bid on it, i take it. I guess i will first check out any thrift stores in my area. The guy said it's in "working condition" but that is in his e-mail. What does cottered mean?

I hope it fits me, my xc hardtail is 19" and it fits me perfectly. This one says, (20" frame, standover height (ground to cross bar) is approx 29".) which i hope will fit me too. I'm hoping to get a beater bike since i will use it to travel to school everyday.

The other thing you might want to confirm before bidding is that the seller will let you pick it up in person instead of shipping it. I know you're in the same area, but still that would be good to have settled. edit: never mind my blatherings, he says right in his terms that local pickup is good :o
