I just put some new tires on some old 27 inch rims. The rims are in good shape and I noticed a slight bump as I am riding. Never noticed it on the old tires, so I looked at the tires, and there is a slight difference in the way the tire is set in the rim. A little lower in one spot than the rest of the tire. Is it pretty common, and I just never noticed before, or could the tire be defective?

I recently had this and had to have the rim adjusted as I had a flat spot in the rim. Not sure how it happened, but I had the same hop on 2 sets of tires, so that is when I looked at the rims. Once I had the rim checked, everything is good.

It is definately the tire, the rim is true and round, on the flat spot you can see it sits lower in the rim. Thanks for the response, I'll ride it a little and see what happens. And the old tire I just took off did'nt do this.

It sounds like you need to reseat the tire on the rim. Do a search for seating a tire and there's been some discussions on how to fiddle with it if it doesn't seat perfectly by itself.

I had a MTB tire do this recently and i had to fiddle with it - basicaly using my thumbs with the tire at very low pressure to get it even around the rim. Then, pumped it up quite a bit higher than specified (I think this tire is a 60lb tire, I pumped it up to more than 80) and it popped onto the rim evenly.

Good luck.

If you put a suspect tire on a good rim and you still get that bump it is likely the tire.

That sounds like a good thing to try, thanks.

Sometimes they'll "pop" out if you add a little more air pressure.
You could also let the air out and lube the tire bead with some dish soap. Reinflate and you should be good. Also, add some air, then work your way around the tire squeezing the sides together. Repeat.
Sometimes those tires can be a bit difficult.

Lower the tire pressure to around 20-30 PSI. Where the tire seats low, press the tire inward away from the rim wall and it will usually seat better once returned. It may take a few rounds around the tire. Sometimes I also have to use a "rolling" action like I'm trying to roll the tire off the rim to get it so seat better.
