You said the Trek is well fitting. If you replace the frame, how well fitting will the new one be? I would think the geometry has to be pretty much exactly like the original Trek frame. Or else you won't feel as good - then you might hate it and regret selling the Litespeed.

I think his avatar makes it pretty clear. The anal probe industry is huge these days. Lots of money to be had (and found, if you're lucky!).

I have a 2006 Litespeed Ultimate. My beater bike is a well-fitting but ugly Trek 2100. I have 6 figs of grad-school debt. I've been listening to Dave Ramsey. I'm not sure if I am "acting my wage." Therefore, I am contemplating selling my beloved (but not flesh and blood) Litespeed. Based on other auction sales, I can't imagine why my (upgraded) bike isn't worth around 4k+ on ebay. 4k is a tad under 10% of my private student loans (higher i%).

To cope, I would have to buy a replacement frame for my Trek. It's just too ugly to have as my only bike. I was thinking maybe a Leader carbon frame and swap components.

So, should I do it, or will I regret it miserably?

Which bike do you like better, in terms of fit and performance? I'm not necessarily advocating selling the Litespeed. Ten years from now, which do you think you'll wish you had done? But if you do sell a bike, perhaps instead of getting the Leader frame, you could put that money towards repainting the Trek, and end up with a bike that fits and looks good to you.

I am jonesing for a bike i sold when going back to school and trying to pay off debt...I am actually considering looking up the dude who bought it to see if he will sell it back!

I basically regret it because it was the one bike I let get away that fit me well.

I have sold countless others that were too big/small/heavy, too far gone to ride (sold for parts), or not worth keeping and maintaining/modifying due to being too inexpensive or built with non-standardized threads/dimensions.

I am always sad to part with any bike but if they don't fit your body or your riding style why not get the money and make room for someting else in your life? But it sounds like you'd miss yours, and the money wouldn't make a big dent in your debt.

...if you happen to sell your Litespeed...I can vouch for the awesomeness that is the Leader 796R frame. I love mine.

if i was a mechanical engineer...id be able to afford a 4k bike and keep it...i mad it a little over halfway through for electrical, but electrical engineering is, well, crazy...

maybe you should find a cheaper place to live, less expensive car, dont go out on the town, buy lower cuts of steak....

Having said that, I've got $100.00 USD I can offer for it if its 52cm to 56cm. (I can make do with a wide range of sizes for $100.00 ti ride.)

I'm not familiar with Ramsey's work, or exactly what you mean by "acting your wage." If I had to guess, he's an advocate of not using rotating credit or loans to purchase items that you wouldn't be able to otherwise afford.
You already own your Litespeed, (I'm guessing.) Did you pay for it outright, or put it on credit such that you're still paying for it?
If you sell it, you can pay off a chunk of student loans (or credit card that you still owe money on the purchase, if that's the case.) What's the quality of life impact that the sale of your Litespeed will have versus not having it? (Will you pay down enough debt to be happy enough to balance out not having what sounds like your favourite bike?) Can you cut expenses elsewhere and not have to sell the Litespeed; instead, saving enough each month to pay more toward your loans?

My fiancee and I just went through all this 6 months ago when we realized we weren't banking any money into our savings and found almost $700/month in stuff we really didn't need to be spending money for. Take a look at your overall budget and see where you can trim up a bit before you do something hasty like selling your Litespeed.

Keep the Litespeed. For one thing, you're used to the feel of the Litespeed. Many people are disappointed in the ride of CF and miss the lively feel of Ti or steel. So that's one factor. Another is switching componets to a new bike never quite works out. You'll probably end up with expenses you didn't consider like new cables or finding out the der needs replacment after some miles.

You're young and have a long time to pay off student loans. Sure you need to do it at some point, but ina few years your incomes will be double or triple what it is now.
