Mountain Biking - Have you ever fell off your bike before?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Have you ever fell off your bike and land on the ground?
I did this sunny afternoon, while I was riding along a pathway full of small rocks, I decided to turn..then my bike slid and I fell on the ground. :(
Only a few minor scratches on my front handlebar and now I need to adjust some screws for my mudguards, which are loose.
I landed lightly on my left knee and my left palm, now a little part of my left knee is all bumpy and scratched up.
After I fell, some people playing pitch and putt golf across from me asked if I was OK.
Then I used my water bottle and washed up some wounds and went home to take a shower, trying to clean my wounds fully so there aren't any dirt pieces stuck in there.
After that, I put antibiotic cream and bandaged it and now I feel much better :)
So how were your experiences when you fell off your bike?

When it comes to mountain biking, that's like asking, "have you ever ridden your bike?" I've not been on one MTB ride where I didn't get intimate with the trail at least once.
I actually look forward to falling off at least once or twice a month. Add some spice to the sport :D
btw, I popped both of my tubes today :)

feel a few times geting used to my clipless peddles, never more than a few scratches and bruises.
got asked by a passing driver if i was ok once, was pretty embarresing.
i have minor falls pretty often ... figure if i dont i aint riding hard enough. Last time I fell major was at downieville 2 years ago ... I was rouding this off camber turn on the paved part and as i got into the turn i realised it was pretty damn sharp and bailed off into the side ... ****ed up both of my hands and handlebars got bent out of alignment ... was able to ride the rest of the trail cause my adrenaline was flowing ... but then on the shuttle ride back to camp my hands started hurting like a mother! it was terrible.
then a while before that i hit a ditch and broke my collarbone .
and when i was 7 years old i wasnt looking where i was going and hit a parked car ... 16 stiches in my leg ... ouch!

I fall at least once a ride...sometimes more depending on the trail...so falls are required :D I am not usually worried so much abut me getting injured but me having to pay for my bike being fixed.

Eight times in the last two years - most recent being yesterday. They have ranged from high-speed crashes that have left me with permanent scars, to crashes with no physical consequences whatsoever (as per yesterday's crash).

Hell everybody falls in any kind of cycling and when referring to mountainbiking it's a matter of how and not when. Personally i used to fall a lot when i started, but not really a lot lately because my speeds have gone up in every trail i ride and i usually back off before i go in over my head b/c getting hurt is a ***** and not worth it. More recently my paps dislocated his shoulder and cracked and pushed back his rotator cuff(the shoulder bone socket thingy) on a log that he rammed right into.
Some of the funnest falls are also the worth. I had one where i ran into a rut, endoed, and landed flat on my back on a raised part of the trail. I unclipped in mid-air.

Yes, probably 4 times in 60,000 plus miles; that is why I am typing this onehanded. April 25 was the big fall. Not sure why- think I rode over object I did not see?
So 6 days I am in a sling from rotor cuff surgery. Miss my bike very much and am bored. Really tore the liagments to shreds. Think will be ok in two months.
Love mt cycling still and anxious to get back. 60,000 miles I have logged.
Still biking confidence somewhat effected. Think prefer lower speeds, no longer interested in racing- just touring. Think prefer bigger tires. Have riden between surgery and April accident. Used my touring bike- not my
older racing bike upon which accident occurred. Sort of feel jinxed about that bike. I know supersitious.
Still hope to get in my September tour.,
Probably 4 falls in 9 years- want my bike confidence to get back up to 100% again. 60,000 miles. one fall per 15,000 miles mostly minor. I know keep a very close eye on the road surface.
I don't fall very often, but when I do it's usually something pretty major. My last major fall I fell off a 4 foot wall. Really sucked. Every once in a while I have a small crash.. like last weekend I couldn't get unclipped. Lost my balance as I was coming to a stop and couldn't get my right foot out because it's my weak foot. I toppled sideways and my face came LITERALLY inches away from a barbed wire fence. I felt pretty fortunate that I didn't get seriously disfigured. I usually only crash when I'm doing something I probably shouldn't be doing :o
I fell off today, was doing a trick, where you take your foot off one pedal and your hand off one side of the bar, bring your foot to the other pedal, so you have two feet on one pedal, and two hands on one bar. Then you lean back, and lean the bike the opposite way, so you and the bike are like an obtuse V. All while moving at high speed :D
I leaned so far and then the bike swerved to the right and threw me off, into a grass verge on the edje of someones house, which is lucky, as the track i was on was gravel. Funny trick.

I did a road gap today and fell off into some boulders when i cased the landing. It didnt hurt though.

You usually don't crash unless you are pushing it, except for those slow motion crashes because you lost your friend momentum. That means 3 or 4 crashes per month, but they are usually just flesh wounds. Then you get the odd crash from another idiot on the trail... which I'm still pissed about...

I was thinking the same thing. Either there was sufficient armour protection involved or I'd like to find out where one gets those soft boulders so I can use them as replacements for my couch cushions. :D

i was tearing up some single track in northern california (china camp) and i lost it, i went over the edge fell six feet landed on my right shoulder fliped over and slammed my left shin on a rock and rolled 10 feet down the side of the mountain - talk about major mountain rash- i get up bloodied, dirty and pissed. i look around looking for my bike and see it 15 feet down the hill upside down hanging from a tree limb :)

Crashed: Yes
Injured from crash:numerous times.
Worst crash: While riding with a friend in Dover, NH, took a short cut back, had to borrow a bike from him, broke the quickrelease on the front wheel, the bike I was running had V's, I was used to discs, at the end of the short cut, there is a hill and at the bottom of the hill there is a turn, and alongside the turn there is a split wood fence. I go to slow down, forgetting that the bike had v's, too late to bail, cringed and expected the worst. Bike hits pothole, I endo through the split wood fence. Told my friend I was fine, when I actually dislocated my left shoulder. So get bike repaired and go out on another 50 miler, all with a dislocated shoulder.

No, i dont wear armor, i find it kind of nagging.....and yes, i understand the risks, but am willing to accept the consequences and i have adequate insurance to cover in case something were to go awry. I always wear a helmet though. :)
I have a knack for not hurting myself too bad when i crash. (knock on wood) unless ihave an actual collision of sorts.
We're going back to shoot some video of the gap and some other drops and stuff. I'll post some stuff up later on.

the question for me is" how many times have i not fallen off my bike :) i have developed a technique of roll and slide that protects my bike and allows bruises to form in continental shapes on my body ..lol
can't wait to see what the new bike will feel like ...

I fall all the time, I've been off the mtb for about a week and a half now due to the last fall I went over the handle bars and landed on my back, bruised up the ribs pretty bad and whenever I hit a bump it's extremely painful so I haven't been able to go play on the trails instead I've been putting in alot of miles on my roadie, hopefully I can get back out on the trails soon I miss falling I'm getting rather well at landing so great falls.

Ride bikes long enuf and you will be praying to the gods of dirt and asphalt.
(1) Lost enuf skin to cover my back(from different parts on my body
(2)Possibly bruised up spleen/abdominal area close to it.
(3) Busted both ankles/wrists/fingers/back
(4)Burying best bud(old steel Nishiki) after 4 years or hard core XC riding
Worst part is buying a new bike and finding out later that i can't stand the pain emanating from different parts of my body.
BUT IT WAS ALL WORTH IT, AND I WILL BE BACK EVEN IF I HAVE TO REPLACE EVERY DAMNED PART OF MY BODY!!!
Thank god for Brain buckets.

What model Nishiki? I used to own a 1990 Ariel (steel) that I raced for a tad. I loved that bike. Sadly I gave it to my brother when I bought a new bike and he left it out to get stolen. :(

i broke my finger earlier in the year flying over my handlebars. it was my first time on this trail and my friend and i wanted to test our new lights out. smart move on my part! but i was more worried about my lights being broken than my hand. it didn't feel broken until i got an x-ray the next day. falling is half the fun as long as you don't get dinged up.

Yes, I used to fall every 3rd ride. Mostly due to adjusting to my new clipless pedals. I'm getting better though.
On my second ride with the new pedals I fell hard. My handle bars hit the ground perpendicularly and I landed on the end with my sternum. I thought I broke my sternum. I was in so much pain I started blacking out, and I couldn't get out of the road for the people in the Jeep that witnessed the whole thing. That was mid-May and it still hurts when I lay on my stomach. I think falling comes with mountain biking territory.

I had an 1994-5 Steel Manitabo that had everything upgraded and flew around every thing. In 2001, I had a friend that had a GF Sugar and he was about a 100lbs lighter than me and couldn't get away no matter how hard he tried.:D
It gave him fits. Plus too, when we ride and do a little urban riding, him on slicks and me still with my knobbies he still couldn't drop me:beer:

For the most part you should butch up 'cause chicks dig scars. But if you are cut on your face or something, Walgreens sells vitamin E with aloe vera skin oil. Put this stuff on until the skin is covered over (until the scab goes away), after that put on this stuff called Mederma. Mederma is for scars but is sort of expensive, around $30 for a small tube. I took a hockey puck above the eye and 20 stitches, followed these directions and now have no scar at all.

Oh ya one more thing, do not go into the ocean with a cut. Salt water on open wounds suck eggs and make a big scar!

Salt water makes the scar really red for a long time. Just use the Mederma stuff.
