Cyclocross - v-brakes?

I'm going to take possession of a cross bike with v brakes and travel agents (the doohickies that replace the noodle sos youse can use regular road levers with em).

Anyone run this setup? why or why not?

Have tried it before, they were not as reponsive as I would have liked. There are some people that get them set up right.....but I have always found that they need to be tweaked alot. A good set of Avid 4 or 6's will work fine. I've tried the frogglegs before and they were not worth the money for me.

Front v-brake and T/A is my experiment this year. So far it's been working okay. No issues in about 150 miles.

is this bike running sti or ergopower shifters? if not, you could swap the current levers for those diacompe 287 ones that pull the right about of cable for v brakes.

Last night I switched the Avid 4's on my Jamis Supernova to Tektro Mini-V's w/o travel agents. I won't have a chance to fully test them until this weekend but so far they feel much better. I'll report back later.

If you are running the Ergopower levers, use the releast pin on the lever to open up the lever and then adjust the brakes. The increase throw of the 'open' ergo lever gives much more leverage. Otherwise, you'll need to use the travelmate to provide the increase throw.

My old Scott 520 frame was worn out. Switched the components to a new Surly Cross Check frame, since the old bike was beginning to shift rather awkardly. So the new Surly had V style brakes but the old Scott had indexed Shimano Handlebar shifters. Only way to adopt part a to Surly part b was with a travel agent.
No problems really. Shifts like the old bike did. Am told to watch the travel agent, sometimes the cable that wraps around the agent gets frayed and can be a weak spot that breaks. I have an additional agent on hand, since sometimes shops don't carry them. I believe there is a handlebar shifter made by Sram, that makes the travel agent unnecessary when attached to v style brakes. ?

yeah, STI. I'll probably just ride the thing, and see how I like it. Swapping out to cantis is an option, and a pretty reasonable one at that.

i hooked an avid single digit ultimate up to my sti... no problem, except for the fact that i have to readjust the cable every time my pads get worn (700-1000 miles). other than that it works better than the old v-brake. true rims a must....
