Southern California - Mid-year Goal Check

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We're almost to the halfway point. Doing pretty well with the goals I set at the start of the year:
* 5000 miles -- just under 4000 so far
* One century per month -- in good shape, I think I have like 15 or so for the year so far.
* California Triple Crown -- done
* Lose 10 pounds before Solvang Double -- meh.
* Commute to work by bike minimum of once per week, during Daylight Saving Time -- until the start of the new job I was doing it pretty regularly (even before Daylight Savings Time). Now, I have to figure out a new route and showers...

Doing pretty good as well
*7,000 miles -- So far 3,362
*Century a month -- Averaging 3 per month
*New frame set -- In the works :D

Likewise, I'm on track:
* 7,000 miles for the year -- just under 4,000 so far
* One century per month -- in good shape, I think I have like 15 or so for the year so far - just like Joel.
* California Triple Crown -- done
* NEW GOAL - 1,000 mile club - I'm pretty much set on doing the fall Solvang Double
* Lose 10 pounds before I blow up like a balloon and float into oblivion -- I gained them. So!!!!? The bright side? Now, I have a new goal! :p
* Commute to work by bike minimum of once per week, during Daylight Saving Time -- not happening and not really a goal...more like a wish, but I just can't find a route I'm comfy with - well, that and it's a PITA to coordinate
* Complete at least two rides I don't think I can finish - did one so far, Sea to Summit. Not sure what the next one will be, but I'll find it.
Next year? Just got off the phone with Francis. He has damned near talked me into riding the Grand Tour Triple. Hmmmm....might keep the second half of my last goal for that! I'll see. :D

Only goal I set for myself is the California Triple Crown .... completed!
I've always wanted to finish a long ride, from start to finish, with Lynn ... I did that at Davis.

I had to dig mine up from the old threads:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=280615&highlight=goal
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=253029&highlight=goal
Mine are pretty simple:
- Continue to have fun on my bike
Check!
- Try to NOT buy something from every website and bike store that's having a sale, every time they have a sale (hahahaha, not much chance of this)
I'm pretty sure I didn't buy something last time Performance ran a sale.
- Ride my First Century (Solvang). If I like it, ride for more centuries.
Check
- Meet all you fine bf folks (hope to meet many of you on the Bloat ride!)
Check
- Ride and average of 3x/week
Check
- Climb Las Flores without needing to stop and/or walk before getting to the top.
I busted up Tuna Canyon, which is a steeper but shorter. I'm considering this a half check for now.
- Go on a bicycle ride with Extort to witness this legendary climbing ability for a brief few seconds before he drops me like a ton of bricks and gets out of my sight.
Check, I rode with Phil briefly in Palm Springs chatting with him up one of the legendary climbs on that ride. Then he dropped me, awesome.
From the 2nd thread:
I've got measurable goals now. I'm targetting 3500-4000 miles and 200k-250k vertical feet. This year is primarily about getting solid legs under me, less of a gut in front of me, and becoming an ok climber. I'm targetting the ability to finish the mulholland challenge and one of the centuries in the sierras next year and finish both feeling basically fine.
Check, down 40 pounds this year, and I'm an OK climber. Base training now in prep for KOM training later this year.

Hmmm, my goals? I had none. Did BA only to see if I could after I heard all the horror stories of how tough it was. Not that bad. I'll take an hour off next year.
My goal was to tell my employer to kiss my azz and find a day job. Mainly so that I could return to a normal life and spend time riding with Gina during the week. A BIG CHECK on that one!:D
My goals would have to be for next year. Get back into shape, lose the extra 20 lbs, do the TC and KOM! This year is just for cruising.:p

I don't have a cycling goal, except to keep cycling til I'm 97. But I do wish I had time to do self supported multi-day cycle tours. :D

I don't have a cycling goal, except to keep cycling til I'm 97. :D
You should just make it an even number and take it to 100!
For me, the goals were:
I'd like to do a century a month, So far, so good.
one double century towards the end of the year, I'd still like to do a double century towards the end of the year. ;)
and at least 5000 miles on my bike. I'm at 3705 now, so I hope I'll be able to get to 5000.
5000 miles...I am at 2165 so I think I am a bit behind...but have 3 centuries coming up
New PB for Stagecoach, Palm Springs and LA River Ride - all done - hope to increase that next year
Cool Breeze is next...
Ride 3 centurys....looks like I will end up with 5 or 6 at least - maybe more...
Work on my climbing...still slow, but getting better...Bike Journal says 108k feet already...wow
Drop out of the clydsdale category by Cool Breeze....25 down - 6 more to go
No falls - on my road bike....so that little mtb incident wont be counted!
VanceMac
06-24-07, 05:16 PM
:) KOM series -- completed.
:( No injuries -- eh... current knee problem has me a little concerned.
Drop 10 lbs - I think I gained 3lbs wtf :(
Break 15mins on the Reseda climb- so far at 17:22 but that was maximum effort past the gate and my heart rate was so high I think I nearly had a heart attack...
Thats my whole goal for the year. I dont care about mileage hehe and I gladly stop at 92miles without doing the full 100, just not something I care about.
My goal was to ride as much as possible, I thought that 3,500 miles was attainable. I'm at 1,905 miles right now, and should be at 2,000 before the end of this month. So now my goal is to hit 4,000 miles by the end of the year and in the process, stay healthy! Now if my bike will cooperate.

My goal was to do a 100 miles ride. I thought you need a year or two to complete such task. I even canceled Solvan century in March because I thought I will die if I try... But, in May 12th I did complete my first - Check.
But, I jump much higher and did double a month & a half later. It was not a goal at all;
I never thought it something I am aming at.
Now, I am not sure any more... so, no goal, just go with the flow.

After seeing how you rode this past weekend, you should shoot for a triple century ... or for that matter, go for your triple crown. Mt. Tam, Knoxville, Solvang are all upcoming. You can do it!

- Well on my way to my 5,000 mile goal (3,800 so far).
- Completed all three KOM events, but missed my total time goal of under 20 hrs by a few minutes. Gives me something to shoot for next year.
- Still commuting to work on my bike every day (minus a a few rain days)
- Won my fist club race – time-trial up Torrey Pines.
- Best of all, I got my new bike :D
:) KOM series -- completed.
:( No injuries -- eh... current knee problem has me a little concerned.
My goals are the same plus 6,000 miles for the year. Completed the KOM but hurt my back on February 20. Missed 5 weeks of training in Feb and Mar and still have a lot of pain. During Heartbreak and the 2 GMR rides, the pain was bad. Took a week off in early June but today I'm sore. Oh, well.
I'll probably miss the 6,000. Maybe 4,500 or 5,000.

Which club?
I completed a bunch of goals I set at the beginning of the year. There was no deadline on them (they weren't really all meant to be completed within a year).
1) Ride to work in under 1 hour elapsed time. I did it in under 55 minutes.
2) Ride from work in under 1:30 elapsed time. I did it in under 1 hour 10 minutes.
3) Ride a century. Completed the San Diego (Encinitas) Century.
4) Complete lunch time work loop to Balboa Park via Texas Street and returning via Bachman Place in under 45 minutes bike time. I completed it in about 44 minutes.
What I'm left with is complete a 1/2 century in under 3 hours bike time, and a century in under 6 hours bike time. These are more difficult. I of course could cheat a little and make the course totally flat.
New goal I added recently: Complete the Fiesta Island Time Trial Course in under XY minutes. XY is TBD.
One for the future is more an experiment meant to educate. Take one month and do not drive at all. I need to find a good month to attempt this.

Break 8-min running mile over 10k. Not. Going. To. Happen.
Lose 5 pounds. Gained 7.
Build my dream bike. Wednesday.

4 - I was going to get him a bike last year, but he's got an over-protective mom, and we have psychotic neighbors who think going 35 mph around our corner, blowing the stop sign, is acceptable. Reece needed to learn sidewalk awareness and what happens to people when they get hit by cars. Luckily, he stepped on a snail once and I was able to explain that's what would happen to him if he got hit. Kid looks both ways two times now.

Here I am the originator of the 2007 Cycling goals, and I'm a bit behind. While I'm happy with where I am at. There are a few goals that I wish I would have done better at.
Ride more with the BF gang: 3 rides last year, 5 rides so far this year
Annual Mileage: 5,000 + : After being sick the whole month of February, mileage suffered, will work hard to catch up.
Total Climbing: 250,000 + ft: By July 1st 140,000 ft., should easily surpass this one
Double Centuries: 3 (Triple Crown: Solvang, Davis, Grand Tour) Work & family obligations got in the way, maybe next year.
Single Centuries: 12 (at least 1 century per month in addition to the double centuries) 6 Centuries for the year (not one a month though), plus 4 rides between 90-99 miles.
King of the Mountains Jersey: Mulholland Challenge, Breathless Agony, Heartbreak 100 (total 30,000 + ft of climbing) Mechanical on MC, completed BA & HB. Have to do it again next year
Death Ride: 129 miles w/16000 ft of climbing. Coming up on July 14th.
Lose enough weight so that I can climb like Extort. lost 15 lbs, 30-35 to go.

a nice gate place like yours and your kids aren't even safe crossing the street is pretty lame. They need to put speed bumps in there or something to help control speeds.

My goals got shot down early with a couple of medical issues, so since then I've been trying to catch up.
Centuries: only Solvang and Ride Around the Bear so far.
Double Centuries: Hemet, Eastern Sierra and Grand Tour.
BF rides: Only the 39/East Fork/GMR ride
. . . and now I have a work commitment that will keep me from riding Knoxville  .
Haven't been keeping track of milage since it's been so little compared to prev. years.
Maybe do a couple more doubles when the weather cools off! :)

What was the time?
6:27.
Started from the entrance to the parking lot, up the outside grade and finish at the traffic light at the top.
I did this on my 20lb Trek 2100. I may test myself at some point with my new ride and see if I can break 6min.

Complete my first century which will be Stage Coach, and do it feeling good.
Do some crit racing with the local club I joined.
Climb Old La Honda in under 20 minutes, current best is closer to 24.
Regain my strength in my back to I can ride my SS's again.
I want to break the 3000 mile mark on the road bike. 60 miles a week sounds easy.
Climb like Extort. Ive never ridden with Phil, but he must be fast.
I guess i should add that Id like to be injury free this coming year.
Edit, and most importantly, have fun.
Well mine has been a mixed bag.
Complete my first century, Ive done 5 this week will make 6. Including one that was close to 11,000ft of climbing. I still have far more fun on 60-70 mile rides with lots of climbing.
Ive done zero crits and dont see that happening.
Im not close to the 20 minute mark, but Im getting closer.
Im well ahead of my mileage goals and will be at over 2000 by the end of the month.
Still dont think I climb like Extort, but I carry a few extra lbs at 195.
Ive been anything but injury free. Ive lost 7 weeks to injury so far this year. But Im still ahead in mileage. However those injuries are not helping in my climbing speed as Ive had to change my approach.
Im having alot of fun, so Im having a great year.

I live right on two stop signs...during the summer months when we sleep with the windows open, it's easily 9 out of 10 cars don't even slow down. I put cones in front of our driveway when the kids are outside, but I'm freaking out at the probability that Reece is going to get up, run to the garage for his bike and go tearing out for the day...only to get creamed by an oblivious neighbor. I'm shocked it hasn't happened yet to some other kid.

Well, when I drink, I strip down to a pink thong, wear a clown nose, stick a Gwen Stefani dot on my forehead, put on overly huge sunglasses, don a bedazzled jean jacket, tease and spray my bangs, and hop on one leg...just like Extort. The only thing I don't do that he does is curse out girl scouts in Mandarin Chinese...but I'm going to night school for that...Then I'll be drinking just like Extort.
