I'm no spelling Nazi but there comes a point where **** gets ridiculous.

Really bad idea.
I'd look for a fork with 120-130 mm of travel.

Your front wheel will be unable to keep contact with the trail because your center of gravity will be way back over the rear wheel. Plus it'll look like a chopper and then you'll have to post it in the recumbent forum as it'll no longer be a mtb.
I may suggest not drinking so many monsters.

Yeah that would snap your frame pretty fast and the geo would be horribly out of whack. Try to find a fork with no more than 130mm travel.

06-24-07, 07:33 PM
that's a pretty moronic idea to be honest. and the guy at the bike shop is lying. it will break your frame and mess up your geometry.
just get a nice xc fork like a manitou black at nashbar for $280, normally $550. or if you want to go the rockshox or marzocchi route, look into RS rebas and marz bomber forks. any of those would be good. i've always ridden manitou, and it's always been good to me. some people will swear they hate manitou, but some people will swear they love them.

I ran 150mm of travel on my hardrock for a good period of time...the frame snapped at the right chain stay and the head tube was turned into an oval. This was ofter 4 years of hard use.

I would just get a good 130mm fork...
you need a bike that has the support bar connecting to an extra high seatpost, along with the correct geometry ment to hold pressure at different points... Forgot what that support bar is called but heres a picture : (This bike has 171mm of travel)

why is everyone here a repost Nazi?
Get the 170mm fork, and then post a pic when you've put it on the bike.
Get it. Sure. Its a fantastic idea*

i wish it would work
but moding my frame would probabyl be expensive
so i might just stick with the 140mm fork

well i was at the shop and im pretty sure that instead of keep upgrading the hardrock im going to put it towards a trade for Specialized FSRxc Comp
which i can pick up for about $1500-big improvment
MAYBE
Fuel EX 6 is about $1,450;)

Yeah, if a bike was made for an 80mm fork, it's generally a bad idea to almsot double the travel. That not only puts strain on the frame in ways it wasn't designed for, but also changes the geometry of the bike.
Handling will suffer, comfort will suffer, and the bike will suffer. It's just not a good use of cash.
At one time I wanted to do this to my Talus, then reasoning got the better of me....now instead of a Hanebrink G9, I am looking at a SID race. The SID costs less too :)

Wow. First you want a DH/FR fork and now you want a XC bike.
I suggest you keep riding your stock hardrock until you figure out what type of riding you want to get into.

i would love to do DH but that's just too expensive for me.
If you like riding DH/FR then get a bike that suits it. You can very easily get a bike for $1500 that will be good for that or at least better than the FSRxc. Cause if you ride pretty agressive that bike will not hold up becaues its a XC bike hense the FSR XC

any thoughts on the Iron Horse Yakuza Kumicho?
i think i could get one from Amazon for $1,300, but it might be an older model, they don't have a pic or tell which year
