The last model XTR is on sale at Nashbar for $240 or something, cheaper than I have seen the XT listed anywhere...

+1 on the XTR. Check the crank lengths, though. Often times these deals are for very short or very long cranks.

I think it'll be a nice upgrade for you, LX (hollowtechII) may suit you well, too. The XT's are a great set of cranks for what I do, much lighter than the Coda EX8 ISIS BB on my (retired) Cannondale jekyll. Got them slightly used for $134 for 175 mm.

$260 for XTR M960?
But its $170 for XT FC-M760!!!
That is $90 differences. Look at the percentage. that is 53% more!
I always think XTR are not worth it unless you care a LOT about weight.
FYI, FC-M760 is similar to FC-M952 as that is how Shimano does it. If you wait for the XT (08), it will be as good as FC-M960 at XT price.
I think you should go with XT.

my price range is in between 150 and 200...which is why Im going with XT because it seems to fall right in that pricerange on ebay brand new.
and no i dont really care a whole lot about weight...i care more about functionality.

Then why are you upgrading?

eBay...that is the buy it now price so no need to waste time bidding! this is powerseller price! Not some cheapest sale from personal sales...you can buy as many as you want (+ shipping) but same with $260 XTR from online bike shop...you need to pay shipping as well.

because the crankset/BB im using now came off of a Target bike ;)
I have a question about crank arm length...what determines what size you should have?? I notice that 175 seems to be standard...im about 6'1''...but my crankarms now are 170...would I be more comfortable with 175? Or because im used to 170 should I stick with that?

what about it?

wait...really is the only difference between the LX and the XT just weight?
Nope. Strength and shifting performance are a factor, but the shifting performance is factored out when you replace the worn out rings with XT rings. :)
What about Hone's. I went from LX HTII's to Saints to Hone's and I love 'em. Hones are strong and have steel pedal inserts. They are in the weight range of LX's, but tougher. If tough isn't an issue, then go XT. XTR is rediculuous unless you're sponsord, spoiled, or stupid. :) (just kidding on the stupid part...it just fit with the "S" theme:))
Hones also have XT m760 rings instead of m580

ok...so m760 is worth the extra 50 bucks then compared to the 580's
Yup...I'd jump on 'em...umm...wait...do you care about weight? If not, then just buy LX and wear those chainrings out and replace with XT, hehe.
Honestly, the LX group these days is pretty decent.
