Mountain Biking - Do you wear shinguards?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Ive been thinking all day today (since popping both of my tubes :D) that I should get a pair of shin guards. Would a 5 dollar soccer pair (walmart) be suffice or should I give in to a $30 pair of 661's?

soccer shin gaurds will stop scratches and minor bumps... if you just want a little protection those would prolly work..
not gonna be very puncture resistant though

It'll probaly help if ur foot slips off the pedal...don't want any gashes on ur shin

Yes I wear them. I can't seem to keep my feet on my pedals in some situations...but I also won't wear clipless. :)
Go for the 661's.. You will be more happier...

dude, just keep riding without them, and pretty soon your shins will be just big scars like mine. Chicks dig;)
The 661s are a good deal though. Thats what i use now.

What do you guys think of the knee / shin combo thing? Something along the lines of the Fox Racing 911? I've often thought of putting on something like this when I know I'm going to eat dirt before the day is over.
HStar, the 661's are a shin/knee combo. Pricepoint is having a blowout sale on them, check it out.
I didn't until now, but I'm seriously considering a pair after mangling my shins this weekend on a wicked spill =)

The 661's are great. Protected me on many an occasion.

i bashed up my shin this weekend too. stupid foot slipped off and the pedal caught my leg on the way back. pegs dug deep into the skin made for a nice bloody ride. definately time for some clipless :(
You could probably get some adidas kevlar shinpads and it would work just as well if you wanted to go that route.

Got me a $25 pair of fox knee/shins and had a friend sew a strap behind the knee cup.
been using them for years. Oh the scars I'd have without em!

I've getting serious about buying elbow & knee / shin pads. Right now I like the Fox Race 911's, but as I look at them, they look a lot like my roller hockey elbow & shin pads. For those of you guys that play, are the bike pads similar to roller hockey pads? My ice hockey Jofa stuff is way overkill and hot / heavy, but the lighter roller hockey stuff looks about the same.
I just bout a pair of Fox standar knee/shin guards for $19.99. The fit me perfect! I might sew in an elastic velcro strap behind the knee pad, not sure yet. Hows that workin for you mtnbikerchk?

Those would work. There is a guy who races and wears his hockey pads for protection. They do tend to get a bit warm though.

These are definitely not my bag, but one of my buddies picked up a set of those from PricePoint and I've checked them out. They look pretty durable and are perforated for air. After our 22 mile ride on Saturday, at altitude and in heat, I asked him how they were and he said they breath pretty darn well. Anyway, there you go.
Nope, don't ride with them. I've thought about getting a pair, but I don't really ride agressively enough most of the time to warrant them. I use clipless primarily. They'd come in handy for the urban assault I do I suppose.
Are these the pads you are talking about:

??
If they are, get them from SuperGo. $5 cheaper then Price Point.

It's dead, let it die! ALONE!
I wear the 661 4x4 pads. Ok their not going stop a major injury, but they've allowed me to walk away from a crash more than once. The main thing I find with them is the confidence boost, I'm more prepared to try something knowing my shins and knees will be ok. I've already had one operation on my Knee, I don't want another. They also saved my flesh from a raking by my DMR V8's more than once as well. They arn't too bad to ride in and I can comfortably wear them for an hour or two.

Knee/shin guards obviously offer the best protection. I like to wear my old scoccer pads if I'm wearing pants and I'm just doing some light trail or urban riding. You have to have some type of protection for your legs though. A pair of pads is always cheaper than a trip to the hospital for stitches!

I wondered why I've been feeling like a zombie since posting om this thread.
Let it R.I.P.
