This weekend just gone I went to the Cycle Rally at York Racecourse, and so did several thousand others.
Lin was going over to Durham to pick up her son from Uni. So I got lift for most of the way.
It was still early so I took a country road and got lost, making a 20 mile ride there into over 30miles.
There were lots of trade stands, exhibitions, cycle polo.

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/imjibi/York for a few piccies sunday morning the sun was shing

It was very well organised by the CTC, with catering, auctions, saddlebag ( like a carboot) sale, organised rides for all abilities, even an AUDAX. As I put my tent up the heavens opened, thunder, lightning torrential rain, but it only lasted 10 mins and the rest of day was OK.
Quite a few people were interested in the Rohloff and several had a ride of my bike to test it out. I was like a rep for them in the end answering questions etc. I only saw 2 others all weekend , and I was looking.

I chose a ride that went around the chocolate factories, it was about 25 miles and very enjoyable, but no sampling, bumm3r.

In the evening another ride out into the country and stopped at a quintessential english pub, duck pond cricket pitch the works. The ride back was take no prisoners 20 to 25mph in the dark.( I couldn't shake them off my back wheel LOL)

Sunday morning was warm and sunny. Hundreds attended the service in York Minster, and thousands more turned up for the ride back from the Minster to the racecourse. Including a couple of penny farthings (ordinaries), space ships, unicycles, in fact every type of bike imaginable.

I went to buy the things I had seen on the Saturday in the trade stands. But I never found any Schwalbe Marathon XR tyres that I had hoped to buy there.

Then it was time for the ride home, and it rained, it rained all the way for 75 miles over the Pennines almost fully loaded. Took about 9 hours, very wet, cold, and depressing.

But today I am just thinking about the friends I met, and made.

It was a good weekend, cycled 140 miles in total.

Ah, memories. In 1987 my then fiance' and I, on a tour of England, stumbled into York the same time as the CTC rally. What fun!

Sounds like a wonderful weekend in spite of the rain.

Great to see a little bit of wetness did not put you off a decent ride. Sounds a great weekend and Even I like to see pics of the other end of the UK- About time you posted some of the Pennines.

(For our US friends- We seem to be having a lot of rain right now and floods all over the country. April was the dryest on record and May in the South was dry but a months rain has fallen in just a couple of hours in parts of the UK. June is heading for a record rainfall this year)

Oh I forgot to mention..

at the rally in a big car park some kids had set up an obstacle course, up ramps etc , down steps I did it with the trailer on, mega brownie points. they just couldn't believe their eyes, a grey haired guy with a trailer "nailing" their course.

Me, I couldn't believe I even thought of doing it.
But I got around it, alive and kicking. Lucky or what?
Great fun.
