Bicycle Mechanics - Deore Rear Freewheel

Not sure if this is a problem, but on my back wheel a deore hub, I can't hear the freewheel. Is this a sign of some needed repair or maintenance issue?

No, this is normal for almost all Shimano freehubs. Campy freehubs, on the other hand, always sound like a mad hornet when you are coasting and Chris King and Hugi (now DT) hubs are even louder. Be grateful. :)

I guess I got too used to the freewhell on my Bontrager Race wheels.

Deore isn't loud, but you ought to be able to at least hear it. I've got Deore XT, and the sound is perceptible.

I have a 9-speed Dura Ace hub, a 105 8-speed hub, an Ultegra 8-speed hub and a Deore LX 7-speed hub from the early 90's all on different bikes. None of these make any perceptable noise when I'm riding. You can hear them faintly when you spin the wheels on a repair stand but to the rider they are completely quiet.

Now my Chorus 10-speed hub, on the other hand, can be heard by the neighbors when I'm a block away.

Actually, most freewheels or freehubs make MORE noise when they are dying.
