So I work right across the street from LAX and I'm trying to find the best route there from Santa Monica. This would be a dream ride if it weren't for Marina Del Ray. I tried it out this past weekend, not realizing what a pain (well not really a pain, it's a nice ride, but time consuming) it is to get around the Marina. Seems the fastest way would be to ride straight down Lincoln, but Lincoln is far from bike-friendly. Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to end up near the coast near LAX (the west end of the runway). Thanks!

Check out the metro Bike Map.

I think taking the bike path/marina is going to be the fastest way, even with the detour, because you don't have to deal with traffic lights or many stops.

take the bike path to the ballona bridge then skirt thru PDR and up tp Pershing. Go left on Westchester Pkwy and you'll be right there. Very bike friendly route.
I'd skip the path north of the marina and go down Main to Abbot Kinney, then hop on the path connector at Abbot Kinney and Washington.

This (http://tinyurl.com/33qyds) is the route we took on Saturday from SM to PV and back. I don't really like this ride, but it's a decent alternative when it gets hot in the mountains.

Great feedback thanks.. i'll have to take a close look at that map so i can figure out the best way around the marina. Any estimate on how long it took you to get to the airport?

it is only about 8 miles or so and getting around the marina is easy. the streets are large and flowing around marina del rey.

So I did this last night, and I put the full story in my blog but, i got down to the beach at the end of the LAX runway and a plane shot up and SCARED THE HELL out of me. I'm almost too afraid to bike to work now!

That tends to happen near airports: planes taking off and landing. Ignore the planes. Just enjoy the ride. It's a great route. I did the ride from the green line station to Santa Monica and back three times a weeks for several months last year. Never had a problem with a plane falling out of the sky.... or with anything else for that matter. Enjoy and stay safe.

I see at least one plane take off everytime I drive by LAX on Vista Del Mar... When I'm on my bike I see more. Didn't read the blog, but it sounds like the ride went well. See you out there.
