I've been looking for a cheap bike to ride to see if I will like riding again after 30+ years of not riding. Just something/anything to ride around on and maybe down a trail or two. I saw a ad this morning for free bikes. I called and she said she had "two adult mountain bikes and a bicycle built for two". She didn't know much about them except the tandem has "big fat tires and was a blast to ride". & "They have been sitting a long time and would probably need some work." Heck I've got plenty of oil, grease and elbow grease so I'm ready.:) She said she would hold them for me and give me a call when her husband gets them dug out for me to see. It's kinda like before Christmas... you know you have something but you don't know what it is and you have to wait to see.:D I'll post back as soon as I get them. , Mike

Free is cheap. Making it usable is not.

Free is cheap. Making it usable is not.I guess it depends on your definition of usable. To me it means everything works as it should and not including the shiny or glitzy stuff. I picked the tandem up late this afternoon along with 4 mountain bikes. The tandem is a old Columbia single speed with coaster brake. They also gave me two new tires, tubes and Bell brand seats to go with the bikes. The tandem will need both chains replaced, new hand grips and a complete tear down/clean/lube but my labor and grease are cheap. I don't think we will enter any races or try to set a new land speed record with it but it has already put a big smile on the wife and I. I'm sure it will provide many more smiles and lots of fun. We have already discussed what we will do with it and that is to haul it to near by small towns (we live out in the country)and ride through the basically flat neighborhoods checking out the beautiful old houses. I can't picture where a $3K tandem would do any better than my freebie for what we want to do with it.:D
