Shadflies, baby!!1
They come every year to my hometown before the summer.
The only thing we on the land see them do is shed their skin, then die.
The shedding adds an element of crunchiness to every horizontal surface.

They are ephemeral and their only purpose is to complete the life cycle. They do not even have mouth parts!!!!!! They just screw then die. Ah, what a life!!!!!
