Southern California - Grassy Hollow Again June 30

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, a number of people had an interest in this ride last week but the GT conflicted so I will do it again this week. Same drill as last week ,80 miles ,8500 ft over mostly newly paved road, some parts are closed to cars. 8am from Red Box ,elev. 4600ft. Summiting Dawson Saddle at 7910 out and back. There is water at the turn around at Grassy Hollow Visitor Center but the only food is at Newcombs Ranch. It's 25 miles of Mountains between Newcombs and GH so it's probably a 3 bottle ride although last week I never cracked the third one.Red Box is about 30 minutes by car up Angeles Crest Hwy from Foothill and the 2 or, if you are Thompson ,1 1/2 hrs by bike. Maybe someone will bring a camera this time. Remember it's usually cooler up there so beat the heat. One reason I want to do this again so soon is the fear that the Forest Service will surely close the Forest due to fire danger. They have in the past. While the roads remain open, they rope off the parking areas so no parking at Red Box. Also a reminder that a parking pass is required and they can be purchased usually at the Shell Station at Foothill and the 2 and sporting goods stores.

I'm up for an AC ride. As you all are stronger climbers than I am, I may show up early & take off and you'll catch me along the way.

Is Caltrans still repaving AC? I've been wanting to do an AC century but I have to wait fr construction to finish as I work on weekends.

Not Cal Trans, Granite Construction , hence the good and fast job.The only stretch left to pave is from Newcombs down to where Upper Big T meets A.C. and I suspect they might finish that this week. In the last few weeks I have been up there and haven't seen any road that was left ground up and hadn't been paved. Man it's smooth, especially up to Dawson and down the other side.

Hey Bob, I talked to Daryle and she said she is coming on this little ride. She and Christy are starting a little earlier for an easy pace. Also saw Peter today and he is coming.

Hi, again!
I drove out to do the Wednesday morning ride today, but sat in traffic on the 101 and arrived too late! I drove around for a bit thinking I might find the route to catch up, but no luck. Maybe next week!
I'm definately interested in the Angeles Crest ride. If no parking at Red Box, then where?
See ya at 8!

See ya at 8!I think Bob meant that when they go to Extreme fire danger there is no parking. I checked the Forest Service website and it looks like Red Box will be open for parking, don't forget an Adventure Pass. You do know where it is? You know there is a long stretch with no water? I use a Camelback, but some people use 2 large bottles or some use 3.

RB is about 30 minutes by car from Foothill and the 2. Adventure Passes are sold at the Shell Station by the freeway and some sporting goods stores around town for $5, or $30 for a year. I think that if you are ticketed all you need do is buy one and send it in with the ticket, no fine. Forecast hi temp for Islip Saddle, kinda the medium elevation for the ride at 6700, is 84. Last week it was warm at Red Box but once we left there and headed up it cooled off nicely. What I have done in the past is purchace a bottle of water at Newcombs as a third. Really should take 3 leaving Newcombs. There is plenty of water at Grassy Hollow, the turnaround.

Bruce is meeting his friend, Larry, at the Shell Station at the bottom of the hill at 8 a.m. & then drive to Red Box. They'll arrive at Red Box long after everyone else takes off. They're going to do a "Vertical Bob - Light" ride, or as Bruce likes to call it, a "Horizontal Bruce" ride. ;) They'll ride from Red Box to Newcomb's and if it's not too hot, climb to Cloudburst Summit, then turn around & head back.
