Mountain Biking - Big dude, small budget.

I'm doing the home improvement thing right now, so my $$ is tight. I'd like to get my hands on a "steal" of a used bike that will fit my needs.

I already read that newbies should NEVER buy online, but I'm thinking craigslist is my best chance to get a bike on my budget.

I'm 6'2'' and about 230 lbs, although I'll drop quickly to about 210 once I start riding. I used to do some pretty serious BMX riding when I was a kid, and I have a great trail about 200 yards from my front door. I'll be doing some small jumps and easy to medium trails.

What should I keep my eye out for in terms of brands, size, and components? My range is at MOST $250

19" and 18" frames are going to be too small for him, but he might fell that they're more comfortable than bigger frames. I myself am 6'1" and I ride a 22" frame. I would recommend either a 21" or 22" frame for you. Check the Giant Boulder or Boulder SE. I think they're around $280.

It wouldn't hurt to try out a couple frame sizes and brands at a local LBS. It'll give you a good feel for differences in frame geometry, which can alter the feel of a bike quite a bit. Although you probably wont be buying a bike from them initially, they will still be your source for "consumables" and gear (and maybe someday a new bike?), so I don't think its "bad etiquette".

Buying a used bike usually is the best-bank-for-buck situation, but @ $250 MAX is really limiting your choice for a good bike that will hold up to your thrashing @ your weight. Maybe try a Specialized Hardrock or Rockhopper?

The REI Ponderosa is a decent bike if it fits. Probably doesn't though. I'm 5'9" and it probably fits me. You're on the right track though.

If you keep your eye out, you'll definitely be able to find a 20"+ mountain bike with a good set of components within your price range - I've bought several in the last couple months. The latest was a single-speed converted K2 Zed V with a decent suspension fork, upgraded rear wheel, a bunch of spares, in very nice shape for $125 - just keep your eye out and be ready to jump on the steals on Craigslist the minute they're posted.
