sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but my friend rev.monkey, Alfred W, has passed away this morning, around 10 am est.

Yesterday, June 24th, he was going home from Markham Centennial Skatepark, riding a new bmx (brakeless), and he was riding in the parking lot of Markville Mall across the street when a car backed into him, after which he fell on the back of his head, around 3-4pm on Sunday, June 24th, his 18th birthday.

He sustained severe head injuries and was put in a drug-induced coma for the following night. Doctors tried to open up his head to ease the swelling, but they weren't optimistic about the results in any case. Brain stem activity was about zero, according to doctors, and so the next morning he was taken off the drugs and he subsequently passed away.

He was a great influence to me, and pretty much got me into mountain biking, and drumming, I might add. A great, sometimes sarcastic friend, he was always great to be around and at the dirt jumps, he was pretty much known as "the mechanic". He was registered to go to Centennial College for Aviation Maintenance, and also knew his way around a bike as well - teaching many friends about how to do certain things. And he was in Air Cadets and met many people at summer camp... He just got his bmx, sold his old p2, and started to really have fun @ the skatepark with mike and co.

His funeral and viewing has not been set yet, but it will be sometime next week, after the long weekend. Could be the weekend after, but it could be a weekday, like tuesday or wednesday - more details will come as the dust settles.

I'm sorry for the loss. I never like to hear stories like this. It does remind me not to take every waking hour for granted, however.

I'm very sorry about the loss of your friend. At the same time, each time I read about someone who is killed doing something they love (riding a bike, sky diving, serving in the Marines) I think about the alternative. Give up the things we love. Stay home. Hide under our beds.

And, as sad as it is for someone to lose their life so young, living life to the fullest, doing the things we love...that is what living is really for...hiding from life to be "safe" would not be much of a life at all.

It most certainly will be. I just thought for the time being it would get more attention if it weren't stickied. Personally I rarely notice stickies. It was not moved out of disrespect.

At a loss for words right now. What a terrible thing to happen to such a bright young light. Please let his friends and family know that all of his frineds here on the Forums are holding Alfred in our thoughts and prayers.

Holy crap, this is horrible... I don't know the guy and I still feel really bad, I can't imagine what it's like for people who really knew him. Well I guess I could cause I had a friend pass away last year in a motorcycle accident.

Condolences..

Wow, that is terrible terrible news...

I haven't been here long enough to have gotten to know him, but I did read through his smoking thread, and when I saw this thread, I thought to myself, "Nooo way... couldn't be..."

As someone else said, it really does remind you how fleeting life is. My condolences to friends and family... :(

I can't believe this. My stomach is in knots over this. I was wondering why he never replied in his birthday thread.

Cream Soda, I'm not sure if you knew this but Al Wong posted quite a bit in Foo. I knew him as a crazy guy that would come up with these off the wall kind of threads. One of them was which name he should have! You should see the replies!

One time he replied to me and called me a guy. I always gave him crap for that. It was kind of an inside joke after a while.....I'm gonna miss him. I think we all will.

Please do us a favor and tell his family that he has a lot of people who really felt he was part of the Bike Forum family as well. That we all were affected in some way by his awesome personality. That we will miss him dearly.

((hugs)) to you, Cream Soda. And thank you for being strong enough to let us all know about this.

My heart's out to you OP. I understand your shock and grief. I've just been through it, and it's gonna hurt like hell. Come to BF for support. We're good at that. Please let us know what we can do. :o ((hugs))

I'm sure gonna miss that great guy. He was one of the first BF/Foo'ers who bantered with me at length during a "Foo-Party" when I first joined. I thought he was a pretty together guy for his age, with great dreams for his life....
