Bicycle Mechanics - Topeak Road Morph Maintenance?

I hadn't had a flat in 6 months or so, so the Road Morph that I carry on my commute hadn't been used in all that time (I use a floor pump at home for the daily topping off of my tires).

I got a flat today, and the Road Morph seemed to have lost a lot of its "zip." It took me many more pump strokes than I recall to get to 120psi.

Is there some routine maintenance that I should be doing on the pump that I've neglected?

I had a Blackburn frame pump that seemed to exhibit excessive drag and inefficient pumping. I unscrewed the pump, removed the plunger, wiped out the innards and plunger, placed a little oil on the plunger and all was better. Not sure if this would work on your pump, but it's worth a try and doesn't cost much.

Does anyone have any idea how good topeak is with part replacement?

The locks on my road morph that hold the plunger in place broke and I'm scared that it'll come loose. Anyone have a similar problem and hopefully a fix?

same prob with mine...I just shelved it and back to CO2 till I figure out how to fix it...

I've heard that Topeak is very good about replacements. Contact them and I bet they'll take care of you.

Topeak is awesome with replacement parts.

I broke a seatback mount... It was totally my fault... I overtightened the screw, and split it in two.

I called Topeak, and they laughed at me. I asked if I could purchase a replacement part.

They wouldn't take my money. And they sent me a replacement, and an extra, just in case! They didn't ask when or where I bought it. They were friendly and courteous. I will be happy to purchase more of their products.

No maintanence required. it's just how you pump. 120psi is no more than 10 seconds of pumping, very easy.

I have to take mine apart to remove grit once in a while. Somehow it gets into the pump tube. I just disassemble it, flush the inside with mineral spirits, dry, relube with a light grease, and reassemble.

I'm pretty sure that petroleum-based lubricants are bad for rubber and that using them will only cause more damage to your pump. They sell silicon-based lubricants at the hardware store which are appropriate.

You must pump very fast to get a 23c to 120 psi in < 10s.

Not really, just get on your knees and put all your weight into it. It's only a matter of seconds before I get to my pressure at 115psi. And I'm no strong guy...

Hold on...what grease????
I've taken my whole thing apart, it's all plastic and it all lays in the hands of o-ring. Grease..where?

I believe the logic is that if you lubricate the o-ring and the plastic tube, it will allow the pump to move faster and may help provide a better seal. However, like I said above, petroleum-based lubricants will cause your o-ring and or plastic tube to decompose.

They are very good. I used to have a Topeak floor pump that kept breaking every six months or so. They sent out replacement parts quickly each time, never asked any questions, never asked for proof of purchase.

Of course, eventually I got sick of having to get replacement parts sent out, so I bought a Park floor pump. But Topeak was certainly responsive. (And I still have a Road Morph, so hopefully they'll remain responsive.)
