Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - This board's 'Search' feature BLOWS

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

That's Vbulletin the forum software.

vBulletin search has always sucked IMO. I've been on vBulletin forums of various flavors for about 4 or 5 years now and the search has always had problems.

Yeah, it's sometimes less than helpful.

Then again, I've never met a search engine that didn't really suck a lot.

Perhaps the forum could add a google search option. I believe it's free and google even provides all the code/HTML you'll need.

Also, and this is a plus, I believe if people used the google search option, there would be less load on the server. It'd be one less hit against the database.

Using Google would be a good move, IMO. Google does not "suck"! The current BF search software is maddeningly unsophisticated: it's like old early-90's stuff that automatically uses the "OR" operator if you have multiple keywords. If, say, I'd like to find out if the Rocky Mountain Sherpa ever used 26" wheels, I'd like to search BF for threads containing both words "Sherpa" and "26", but...no-can-do!!! You get all threads with *either* "Sherpa" or "26" in them. Useless!!

+1 on Google. I just wish that the archived version of the threads (e.g. http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-313949.html) stated what forum the post was posted in (commuting, general, etc.). This would make it possible to limit searches to a specific forum. All that would be needed is a string such as "Thread posted in Commuting fourm".
