How good are 600 shifters? Am I correct that they are the same thing as Ultegra? I have the opportunity to buy an old Trek 2300. I was thinking about stripping it for parts for my 1000. Would this be feasbile, or not?

Shimano Ultegra Shifters - 9 speed
Shimano 600 Ultegra Shifters - 7 and 8 speed (7 i think, 8 for sure)
Shimano 600 DT Shifters - 5 and 6 speed
As long as the gearing matches the right shifter, you'll be ok.
My Shimano 600 equiped Trek still shifts and runs beautifully. I bought it new in '91.
I love those downtube shifters.
BTW, it is 7 speed.

These are actually on the brake levers, like the new style ultegra. That's why I wondered if they were equivalent.

I was thinking about the rear-axle spacing, and hearing it's got STI levers is good, because that means it'll have 130mm rear-axle spacing like road bikes use today. Does your 1000 use 130mm?

Correct. Shimano 600 was the designation for the gruppo that later was renamed Ultegra.

I have that same old 2300. Carbon and AL and the 600 group. No problems at all. STI shifters and all the rest. I keep wishing to spend the $$$ to move up, but i can't find a reason to do so.
Enjoy.
