on my bike i want to change the wheel axle to be able to quick release.

Buy a compatible hollow axle or take one from a cheap donor wheel, then follow this hub overhaul guide (http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=105), replacing the solid axle with the QR type and a QR skewer.
Besides the parts you'll need a wrench to fit your rear axle nuts, a freehub or freewheel removal tool (and possibly a chainwhip), cone wrenches, degreaser and grease.

The trick to this project is finding the right axle.
An axle from a donor wheel might not work because the thread pitch will likely be wrong. The other thing to be careful of is axle length. It has to be long enough to rest in the frame dropout but not so long as to extend beyond the dropout.

What is your current bike and hub? Bike Tools Etc and Loose Screws both sell replacement axles and axle sets complete with cones, spacers and locknuts so one of these MAY be suitable. You need to know the rear dropout spacing and hub type to order the right one.
