Fifty Plus (50+) - What Region Of Usa Are You Located?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It has been suggested we have regional get togethers.
TO WHICH REGION OF USA COULD YOU EASILY TRAVEL FOR A 50+ GET-TOGETHER?
OK, if we wanted to have "regional" get togethers, to which city are you closest? How far would you go to a get-together?
I've listed some major cities in the US of A. Sorry if I missed yours. There are only 10 choices available on a poll. If you have another suggestion, please list it below. Stapfam, you will have to handle Europe!

OK - a vote for Boston. I wish there were more than 10 choices available in a poll. There were a LOT of areas I had to leave out!

I voted for DC cause I live here, but would also do about any place within a day's drive, assuming such a gathering involved some riding: most of New England, NY, PA, eastern OH, eastern KY, eastern TN, NC, Va, WVa, MD, DE, NJ. If what we have in mind is just pie, beer, BS, and the like, I would try to make it anywhere that has good flight schedules from DC.
This is a great idea, Herr Fox

I only voted for Chicago because it's the closest.
I only voted for Nashville because it's closest. Hey Beverly, how about lobbying to have Cincinnati added to the list?

I'm not real anxious to drive in Boston again. You all have some crazy traffic rules....driving on the berm of the road, etc. It's like bumper cars coming out of the airport. No wonder the rental company didn't care how many dents were already in my rental car. On the other hand maybe I'll meet up with a couple of those drivers who scared the crap out of me and I can repay their kindness:D :D :D
Another annoying thing was the young man at the service station didn't know where the "pop" machine was located;)

Add anything you might like. That is the purpose. There are only 10 options available. SO we need all the suggestions we can get.
One vote for Cincinnati.

Here's a nice route we did last Sunday, east of Cincinnati. It's marked with spray paint at all the turns. It's 40 miles, mostly flat, with some short 50-100 foot hills around Fayetteville. With the route marked, it's easy to break up into speed groups.
The page includes starting location and a route map:

A Cincinnati route with hills and more hills can be arranged, too.

I did the Chili Ride earlier this year. A nice ride except for the winds this year.
There's also the Little Miami Scenic Trail for people who aren't especially fond on hills.

Philadelphia - 5th largest city in USA
If you look at the top ten by population you come up with:
1. NYC
2. Los Angles
3. Chicago
4. Houston
5. Philadelphia
6. Phoenix
7. San Antonio
8. San Diego
9. Dallas
10. San Jose
I'm just saying....
Portland? #30
Denver? #25
Atlanta? #35
Washington DC? #27
Nashville? #28
Jacksonville? #13
Boston? #24
Cincinnati? Not in top 50
Kansas City? #39

hahaha... It is crazy in Boston, but an hour (or less) away is some great riding on country-ish roads. And plenty of hills as well (and mountains a little further north)
The natives term what you call "pop" as "tonic" here. I'm only a newcomer, though - only here for 35 years or so...

One of the largest park systems in the world , almost 50 miles of off road trails, access to over 40 miles of dedicated bike trails, and the Delaware Valley (of which Phila. is a part) has some of the best riding in the country. Not unlike your vote for Atlanta, I was thinking that outside the city itself would be the best places for riding.
But, I was mostly illustrating that the original list was an interesting one in terms of what was included and what was not. It struck me as curious that there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to what was on the list. And, yes, I did see that DnvrFox noted that he couldn't include more than ten cities.
Perhaps it's from living outside and working in Philadelphia for so long that I can be prone to having a typical Philadelphia attitude. Remember we are the folks who booed Santa Clause.
I think this is a Lovely idea! I voted Portland, because Maupin wasn't an option, and I ride here all the time anyway, I would love to see somewhere new to me, and I would certainly be willing to travel to do that.

I never knew there was another name for "pop" until I started traveling for work:) I find it interesting how different regions of the country have different names for the same item.

I voted Dallas because it is closest to Oklahoma City (Nichols Hills) OK....however Denver or Nashville aren't unreasonably farther. BTW.....Oklahoma has a great topographical variety (open spaces, wooded, swampy, flat, moderate hills) very rural, and populated city riding environments/conditions. We have light winds, strong winds, dry winds, dusty winds, wet winds, cold winds, warm winds, and hot winds........pick two!
No other snowbirds here? I think the list should have been "check as many as apply"!
I could go anywhere mid-continent, from MN to Texas.
Could also use a good excuse for a trip to somewhere I've never been. How's Alaska?

Why would we want to gather in a city?
And what is this slant against the east & midwest? Three cities in the south, plus Dallas & DC and yet the only city north of the Mason-Dixon line that is east of Denver is Chicago???
Perhaps starting with traditional geographic regions would be a good start. New England, Mid-Atlantic, etc., and then people who are interested in those areas could discuss specific locations.

Seriously, maybe Madison, WI would be good for the upper Midwest/Great Lakes region since it has a "bike friendly" rep (Tom Bombadil's recent report notwithstanding) and seems convenient for most of the region. Or how about Ann Arbor, MI? It's within easy striking distance of most of Ohio, Indiana, Detroit, Chicago, western NY & PA, and Toronto -- and it also has a bike friendly rep.
The local availability of quality pie should also be a criterion. 48044 and adjacent Zip codes have a Bakers Square, Grand Traverse Pie, and Achatz Pie. Just sayin'. :) Roads suck, though.
(Edit: I'd drive to Madison just to see Bombadil actually riding in that helmet.)
I voted Los Angeles but only because it is the closest and I have only one choice.
Personally, I'd go wherever I could go in the time allowed (i.e. time off work permitted), preferably within driving distance so we could take our bikes, and where there are a lot of nice bike trails.
What about the Oregon coast? The photos posted here recently make me want to ride there.
Why don't we do it like my nat'l dog club does it? You break it out into 5-7 regions. Every year, in our case, we move to a different region, and the people from* that region pick the location, activities, and kind of organize it.
So, let's say there was a mid-south one to be held. The people from there would talk and maybe they know of the perfect set of trails, or a great state park, or an event that will be happening, so they work out the logistics and then inform anyone else who might want to make the trip.
