Foo - No Group Ride "iPhone" Friday Night

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
In case anyone is interested I will not be able to ride this Friday. Instead I'm going to plunk down $500 on an iPhone.
If you see me on the road on Saturday - look out as I might be watching a podcast while cruising down the Ohio Country rodes.
Have a nice day.

I would spend Saturday on ebay, selling the thing for $1500...
Then Sunday go buy some nice bike swag...

Have fun with that. Could be a good investment. Look what happened with the PS3's.

Even though it's not exactly comparing apples to apples (he he) look at the difference in the anticipation of the product between PS3 and XBoX 360. People were camping out for weeks to get those 2 but the last time I checked I did not see anyone outside the Cingular store and the release of the IPhone is just a few days away....
I'm just waiting to see the first asshat talking on his iPhone while he's riding his bike so I can whack him on the backside of his head as I pass him by.
Seriously, all you Appleholics, buy the iPhone, and one for your relatives and friends too. I'd really like to see AAPL break 150 by the end of the year.
Big time apple supporter here... also will not be getting a $500 phone that costs $120 a month to use... big waste, but lots of suckers will be diving right in ;) (looks pretty cool though, I'll give it that)

The news says people are starting to show up outside of Apple stores nationwide.

Although it looks way cool, the device still has a few fatal flaws:
- Not a G3 phone
- Cannot link to Exchange email
- You need two hands to operate the device. Unlike my current phone where I can just hold one button to speed dial a common number.
- The lack of keypad is going to make texting much more difficult.
This should probably be in Foo.

The difference between the iPhone and the PS3 (ect.) is that the people lining up for the iPhone tend not to be your average "still living with mom flipping burgers to support bad habits" kind of people.

- i don't even own a cell phone... but waiting for a light around here on my bike, it appears that, at least anecdotally, seven out of 10 cagers have a cell phone stuck in the ear and are able to make one-armed tight swinging turns on the green...
- what i want to know is: "Who in the H-E-double-hockey-sticks are they all talking to?"
- and don't get me started on those twits in stores who appear to be talking to themselves while using the Bluetooth earpieces...
p.s. an iPhone is *not* in my future, and i've been a Mac user since '86

Actually the minimum monthly plan is half that
http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html
I also wouldn't buy one to "flip" as I heard Apple has stock piled several million for launch so it should be doable to purchase one through conventional means.
Wont be purchasing one, although in ten years when it comes to Verizon we'll see

hmmm, I stand corrected. Last month I read $120 somewhere (preliminary speculation maybe?). Well, for $60, not bad, but still won't be getting one... yet. I'll wait for the 3rd or 4th generation in years to come when it also acts as condiment dispenser :D

Thank you for being an early adopter so the rest of us can get a better/cheaper version next year.

Yup, this release will be the 1st generation for the early adopters. It should be interesting to see all the iterations of the iPhone 2 to 3 years from now when they'll be selling them at every wireless provider. Or it could be a big failure, and I'll be unhappy I didn't sell some AAPL at 100.

I have been using and developing business Mac apps since 1984. The iPhone is very tempting but I still have a year to go on my Verizon contract. I will be patient. Version 2 will be out in a year and discounts should be available when starting a new 2 year plan.
$60 for the minimum plan is not bad, I was afraid it would be more.
yep first gen Iphone buyer should be branded with the word sucker on to their foreheads. There's suppose to be a new Iphone in about 6 months time from now , Xmas or 1st qrt 2008 so why get one now when there is possibly going to be a better one coming out in less than a years time.
Then there's the Cingular / AT&T wireless plan factor which is a joke. Even if you look at the lowest plan, people are going to become cash cows for at&t. all plans are stuck with 200 txt messages which when you take into consideration normal txt use and chatting on line via some form of IM on the Iphone that just ate up your 200 limit time ot get hit by those additional txt fees ...
450 minutes for a 60$ plan is a joke they should have given out 600 minutes
Ok here's the at&t phone plan : http://www.apple.com/iphone/pr/20070626plans.html
Also one have to watch out for the term unlimited data ... other cell phone providers actually have caps for data and hidden clauses in their EULA which i am sure AT&T will have new ones made up for the Iphone. http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp
might as well kiss about $2k good bye from your pocket book for that 2 year Iphone agreement with at&t

Walter Mossberg of the WSJ likes the iphone. See his review in tomorrow's edition. This gizmo rocks.
Alas, too pricey even for Pcad. Bike schwag must come first of course. Some of you losers need to get your priorities straight. You need Zipps to go fast, an iphone will only slow you down. But by all means, buy one (or more) Pcad also owns Apple stock.

Only $60 a month (unlimited data, 200 texts included, video ipod, youtube, squint), why not. I'll be buying two (have two upgrades) and selling one on ebay, therefore getting a free iPhone (or close to it). I'll still keep my blackberry though just in case. It was announced that it will infact sync with Microsoft products (Outlook) via ActiveSync.
So, why not get one??

How many generations did it take apple to get the ipod relatively reliable?
Ask yourself that question but replace ipod with iphone.

Yeah, I'm totally getting an iPhone- I can't wait to shell out half a grand so Apple can do what Apple does best: redesign the thing even tricker and sleeker within a month, making what I just paid out the nose for obsolete.

While the phone does look cool and the web browsing would be good on that screen, too bad it won't browse like shown on the tube thanks to the AT&T network. I think you'll be disappointed with the net performance, as AT%T's data network is the worst of the big three.
Other things that are annoying to me, but not a deal breaker - only Yahoo and GMail can be used, no Blackberry like synch with corporate server. No expandable memory, limited software expandability and Apple wants all IPhone customers to be Apple customers, but use the AT&T network - meaning they will provide tech support, not AT%T. This may be a plus or a minus, time will tell.
Oh yeah, and it is a $5/600 phone!

One, if even, for the record.
....and how many generations did it take Moto to get the RAZR relatively reliable?
Oh, wait...
It's like the whole SRAM recall crap. EVERYBODY messes up, but Shimano, Campy, Motorola, Samsung, take your pick, have all messed up too.

- Not a G3 phone -- Where is there 3G service?
- Cannot link to Exchange email -- Why not? Turn on IMAP.
- You need two hands to operate the device. Unlike my current phone where I can just hold one button to speed dial a common number. -- I can't dispute this claim since neither one of us have actually touched one yet.
- The lack of keypad is going to make texting much more difficult. -- It has a keypad, just not in the traditional sense. You really shouldn't be texting while you're driving anyway.

The point is that all the carriers are working on this for the US and the phone will not be compatible (and thus slower) when they become available. This will be a bigger deal when the phone is available outside the US.
- Cannot link to Exchange email -- Why not? Turn on IMAP.
This is not the same as sync'ing with your corporate Exchange server. There have been rumours about Apple licensing ActiveSyn from MS, but nothing that is even close to confirmed.
- You need two hands to operate the device. Unlike my current phone where I can just hold one button to speed dial a common number. -- I can't dispute this claim since neither one of us have actually touched one yet.
You can watch a demo on the Apple site. Clearly you need two hands to operate the device.
- The lack of keypad is going to make texting much more difficult. -- It has a keypad, just not in the traditional sense. You really shouldn't be texting while you're driving anyway.
Time will tell if this will pass muster with the user community. I have my doubts. Although there is potential for an add-on key pad through in the future.
I still think the device is quite cool, but there are limitations.

This statement is what's foolish.
The iPhone will be a breakthrough device, much as the iPod proved to be, but it won't be perfect. The only entity in the known universe that is perfect is my dog Sam.

I want the iPhone, but I'm going to wait since it isn't supporting the 3G Network. I can't believe they are releasing an internet device like this, but only using the slow network. I will be waiting for the iPhone 2.0 for this reason.
Did see the Demo of they guy using the onscreen keyboard and it appeard to work great. I use a Moto Q now and love it for work. I am not an Apple Swinger by any means and can agree that the iPhone is going to be great.

people are stupid for waiting in line because there is a huge supply of these phones...no need to wait in line like they did when the psp3 came out they have millions of these iphones in big cities...I will wait for the 2 or 3 generation ones that will add scheduling abilitys
The iPhone will be a breakthrough device, much as the iPod proved to be, but it won't be perfect.
Ipod was not anything novel, iTunes was the aspect that made it good and easy to buy music while everyone was suing each other over MP3s and Napster.
Frankly, there is nothing in an iPhone that a blackberry doesn't do, at half the cost, a year ago. The one exception being movies and videos, but seriously who wants to watch movies on a tiny low-res handheld??
Jobs does a good job of integrating technology and dumbing it down for the masses.
here's a list of stuff missing from the iPhone that Blackberry has:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=390
anytime you block third party apps, you will always be in Mac-land, waiting for Apple to catch up.
No wireless syncing, so for the real world, or business, this is a toy.

The Apple store at 6pm on a tuesday turned me down for looking at my computer which wouldn't turn on. Imagine the crowds of iPhone customers bringing their phones in for service at an Apple store. It's going to be chaos, and you don't have to be an Apple Genius to figure out how pissed these people will be that they won't get their product serviced the same day.
Wonder how sturdy these iphones are to drops. The Razr really takes a beating and still works even when saturated with moisture and dropped again onto concrete.

Next question...
Bull$hit !! I heard many stories of faulty batteries and hardware failure. In fact I experienced it first hand. I had to return to the apple store three times to get an ipod that would work out of the box. Sure I had no problem getting a product that worked, but that was for a music player. My only loss was time. With a cellular phone that I absolutely need for work? I can't afford to have a phone with tech issues. I guess that is my frame of reference...
iphone.... Plays videos, music and makes phone calls but doesn't have a removable battery. Lol. Goood luck beta testers!
