So, I am de-singlespeeding my single speed for my father-in-law. After putting the chain rings back on I am getting some chain rub when it is on the middle ring (that is, the chain is on the middle and rubbing the big).

I feel like there were some little spacers between these (other than the space provided by the crank). Is this right? Or is there no spacer required?

If so, does anyone know where I put those spacers?

Yes, there probably were spacers. Have you looked in the washer bin?

Take a look at the manufacturers website for an exploded drawing or assembly instructions. It could also be a problem of alignment with the front dérailleur.

You can get chainring spacers in different sizes (thickness).

Thanks all. I guess I have to work out some sort of spacer.

It probably isn't the dérailleur adjustment as said dérailleur is still on the work bench.

I looked in the washer bin (which took some time as my washer bin is more of a tub). I also looked in every ziplock of parts and in the pocket of my old work pants. Any other ideas?

Are you saying it rubs no matter in what gear? If so definitely a problem. No idea what chainrings you are using, but are they oriented correctly (not mounted backwards)? Both should have any names, teeth counts, etc. in the same direction, usually to the outside.

You'd think that would help, but it don't necessarily do.

For instance, there are spacers on my Ultegra double spider, but they don't show on the drawings. As a result there isn't a Shimano part number, either, so you can't order them.

zoeglassjd (how the hell do you pronounce that, anyway?), you can figure out the needed thickness from the actual vs. theoretical ring spacing and proceed from there.
