Southern California - August Rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just curious what we've got going.
I'm looking at Cool Breeze on 8/18, but what else? I'm little miss organizer, but I'm hoping maybe some other folks will want to try their hands at it. Hint, hint...those of you wanting "kinder, gentler" rides, here is your chance. :)

I signed up for the DM @ Cool Breeze also, BUT I think I am just going for the Century.
After the Grand tour DM last weekend I think a century is about a far as I would like to go!

I'd like to do that ride from Griffith Park over to the Rose Bowl via the School way up on top of the hill, but I can't do it til after Cool Breeze.

Dave....I've done both and I would say they're about even on the difficulty scale.....although I'm not sure which had more climbing. But I would say that I enjoyed the Cool Breeze DM ride a lot more than the GT DM. :)

Hey Dave!!
Nice riding with you on Saturday! I just looked it up and the Cool Breeze DM has 8500 ft of climbing..
The Grand Tour "only" had about 6000 ft....
I am chalking up last Sat as a BAD day on the bike for me, but none the less.....I don't think I am interested in a DM again....and NEVER a double century...!!

It was good to see you last Satuday, sorry to hear about your BAD day. Just to let you know, you were not the only one. Felt great until the last rest stop, after that stop by the time we got back to PCH at Mt. Mugu, my legs were toast. Never really felt bad, just didn't have the focus to push the last 25 miles. Last year was great, I felt that I could do another 50 miles when I finished last year.
As were leaving the last SAG stop, I was wondering how you were doing with the headwinds across the coastal plain. It was nice to see that you had several people to ride with.
At least we were there to cheer you up that last little hill to the finish line.

OH Lee!!! That little cheer right before the finish line is EXACTLY what I needed!! Thanks!!
I got DROPPED after the last SAG stop......dealt with the headwinds by myself, then I was riding though
Port Hueneme by myself....OMG....what a questionable neighborhood.....I got haressed SOOOO much though that area, I was praying not to get a flat or something...
I was glad the day was over that is for sure!!
Are you just about ready for the Death ride??

I got DROPPED after the last SAG stop......dealt with the headwinds by myself, then I was riding though Port Hueneme by myselfYeah, sorry about that. Towards Port Hueneme I was riding with Alan. After the final rest stop, I was chasing after Laura before getting dropped. I think Patrick was behind me at the time, so I thought everyone are in the paceline. I was able to catch up to Patrick and Rick on 1 and suck behind their wheels until getting dropped again when we hit the coast.
Thanks for staying with me near the end though. You could've ride faster on PCH, but I was already pretty dead by that time.

I almost forgot. As I was leaving the rest stop a charming little street urchin on a BMX bike plastered me with a water balloon. At that point in the ride I hardly noticed.

I'll do SGRT. It's a nice base training ride for me, long and flat, can settle in around 16-17 with the heart rate in zone 2. We should do this.

Not your fault, I was TRYING to stay with Rick but was sucessful for about a second...

Karen, that is horrible. I've never had that kind of experience through there and I was riding through that neighborhood last year in the late afternoon alone (well, there may have been a few male cyclists near by, but I can't recall). I'm really sorry you had that kind of experience. :(

Yeah, there was no other cyclists around, I kept looking back, hoping someone would come up....
I was just thankful I didn't get a flat or have a mechanical or something.....

Of course it would have to be early as it will be hot...

And, really, think about staying with the Cool Breeze DM, it's only a few extra miles
with much nicer scenery.

Too bad I didn't know your condition, it sounds like the headwinds got to both of us, we would have been good company for each other after the last stop. It sounds like being a gal, and riding through that neighborhood, the guys were trying to macho. If there was a guy riding with you, I don't think you would have been haressed so much.
My Death Ride prep is going okay; I've climbed 30% more and have 30% more miles than last year, lost 15 pounds this year and I am climbing better, just not as well as I would like too. I know I will finish, but I will probably be at the tailend of the finishers. All that being said, if you like climbing and the mountains, the Death Ride is still a great ride no matter what your speed is.
I would be up for a SM ride in August, let's keep the climbing on the coast side. We could climb Latigo, drop down Kanaan, the climb back up Encinal and drop down Mulholland, have lunch at Neptune's Net, then back to Malibu. We could start and finish at Malibu Bluff's park across from Pepperdine. My guess would be about 5500 ft of climbing and around 60 miles.

Depends on how ambitious everyone is.
Easy: From Calababas > Old Topanga > Topanga to PCH north
Less Easy: Calabasas > Mulholland > Stunt > Scheuren > Rambla Pacifico to PCH
or bypass Malibu by riding Mulholland to Kanan then over to PCH via Kanan or Latigo.
Up PCH to county line. Rest stop at Neptune's Net then back down PCH to Mulholland.
Ride Mulholland back to Calabasas.
Endless possibilites

August 18th is my birthday! I was thinking about renting a cabin in Big Bear for the weekend and doing a combo event. Roadies can ride around the lake while the MTB'rs can come with me to the ski lifts for a day of downhill run fun! The two-story cabin I found is only $250 for the weekend and sleeps 11 people.
Here's the cabin:

Don't. Just say you'll be there to celebrate, which isn't lying. Ride Cool Breeze (quickly), shower and get there in time to blend into the reception crowd and be seen in at least one photo. She'll never know the difference.

George, if it is any help, you can tell her that the Cool Breeze date was selected before she chose the wedding date. Everyone knows that the Cool Breeze is the 3rd Saturday in August.
I am sure she will understand that it was she who picked the wrong date.
And, just a tip, weddings aren't that big of a deal for the brides anyway.

I totally agree. In fact, she really should reschedule her wedding. After all, she didn't do her research on exactly what rides were taking place in the month of August. Had she, she would have known not to book the church and reception hall, hire a band, cater a dinner and invite 50+ guests on the 3rd Saturday in August. The way I see it, she should reprint and remail all of the invitations, reschedule her bridal shower and bachelorette party and ask all out-of-town guests to change flights and hotel reservations. That really is the appropriate thing for her to do instead of causing you to feel guilty.

You are right Mary.
One possible compromise is she can have the wedding at the Bates rest stop.
