Today the plastic ring behind my rear casseste fell off. My other bike I had for 2 weeks did the same thing.

Is this a part I need? What does it do?
I looked at my wifes Devinci and it doesnt have one. Can I get away without replacing it?

you don't NEED it, but if you're the type who worries about your chain falling into the spokes, then you might WANT it. But you can adjust the limiter screws on the derailleur to prevent chain drop like that.

Read this recent thread about it.

I call them "Dork Discs", if your bike is tuned properly and your derailleur stops set correctly, you don't need them and are only there to provide litigation protection.

"Why yes your Honor, I did remove the plastic spoke protector"

"Yes, my chain did fall off the cassette and into the spokes"

"Yes, that is why my rear wheel locked up and I went tumbling off the hill"

"Yes your Honor, I understand this is a frivolous lawsuit because I didn't Man-Up to my own stupidity and take the responsibility for my own actions"
