Suppose you just ordered a new bike, (which I just did from bikesdirect.com), and now you have to accessorize. What accessories would you buy for the bike in descending order of importance? Here is what I have chosen so far:

1. Pedals (of course)
2. Water bottles and cages
3. Lock

What am I missing?

saddle

You beat me to it. Stock saddles are not normally suitable for 99.9% of the people that buy a new bike. You can only tell if it is right after about a months riding so don't change it straight away- give it a chance but be prepared to take a few trips to your LBs to see what "Might" work for you.

No one has said helmet yet, so....

helmet.

Ya gotta learn how to fix a flat. It happens, usually miles from home.

You're obviously not a card-carrying OCP ;)

If you were, we'd have to confisgate it and shoot your dog.

Cycling specific clothing. Not exactly a necessity but helpful.

It would appear that your going to need a locking presta valve less some guy in a Golden Helmet steals the air out of your tires.

I only know for sure that black works. To date, I have done no research with regard to cordovan.

No, but the ones that come on most new bikes are just there so you can test ride it. You almost always need to buy a saddle and pedals to suit your own preferences. I do at least.

I did not see these mentioned:

spare tubes
tire irons
pump or C02 cartridges (I prefer the pump because I will never run out of air).
allen wrenches (or the multitool mentioned above)

At home it is nice to have a floor pump. Maybe at home a patch kit. When I get a flat, I take my punctured tube home and patch it.

You should get something to clean and relube your drivetrain. I use degreaser and everyone has their favorite chain lube.

All good suggestions! Thanks folks. Surprized no one mentioned mirror. I find my Blackburn brake mounted mirror an invaluable asset.

I was wondering the same thing.....

On our ride last Sat. morning we passed a guy with a cupholder mounted on the bars... it had a full coffee cup in it. We both wondered how the coffee stays in the cup, even with the lid on.

Wow. Don't mention that on the Roadie thread. They'll discuss confiscating your bike, and they'd be serious.
