Southern California - new on the scene...got a few questions.

i just recently bought a specialized langster comp 06, i couldnt resist the deal. went in to the bike shop ready to buy a bianchi pista and found the langster on sale for 800....crazy.
anyway, i have been commuting to and from work everyday, 5 miles each way and am looking for a new saddle and some new tires, any suggestions. looks are definitly not my priority but i wont lie and say that they are not on my mind. if i had my prefference i would love a white saddle and red tires, i have seen many options for both but have not got any good info on quality and performance yet. if anyone has suggestions on either it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Welcome! Hope you're enjoying your new Langster! A friend of mine rides one and he loves it, although he's never really ridden it on the fixed side. Where do you commute to and from?

Very nice tires. Comes in lots of colors.

If your roads are too dirty with glass and other debris and you get lots of flats even with the relatively flat-resistant Michelin Pro2 Race, perhaps get the Continental Gatorskins or the Specialized Armadillos.

I will +1 the Continental Gatorskins. :)

The following are the most mentioned tires talked about when puncture resistance comes up (from everything i've been able to read on this board so far):

Schwalbe Marathons
Specialized Armadillos
Continental Gatorskins
Michelin Krylion Carbon
-Pretty darned good-

The top two are the absolute best but according to alot of people they sacrifice alot of ride quality and grip. The bottom two are still very puncture resistant (they were designed that way but not as hardcore as the Marathon or Armadillo tires) but still retain some very good ride quality and handling nearly as good as most other dedicated road/race tires. The Michelin Pro2Race tires are reported to be puncture resistant, just not quite as much as the ones mentioned above.

I've got the gatorskins (with liners and puncture resistant tubes, but i'm crazy like that) and so far i've been happy. I won't comment on how many flats i've gotten though... It's bad karma. :p

But if you want colors, the Michelin Speedium tires come in a wide variety (including red) and are currently on sale for $10 on nashbar and performance. Then put some liners and/or thorn resistant tubes and you'll have a pretty flat resistant setup with the colors you want. :)

no where to crazy, just the miracle mile to culver city. not a big commute, but its just enough for a newbe fixie rider to get his feet wet.

Check out Fizik..the Arionne comes in lots of colors and is a lightweight, comfortable saddle

Boy, are you opening a can of worms!

I rode a Spec Avatar for a year and just switched to an Alias in April. So far, it's pretty good. It's similiar to the Toupe, not quite as hard and $100.

This is the only valid answer to your question: Try a bunch of them. If there isn't a shop that lets you try them for a week at a time, buy them cheap off ebay and resell the ones you don't like. When you find the one you really like, you can always pop for a new one then.

i've yet to find a Selle San Marco my ass doesn't like. i've got three different ones right now, an era a regal and an aspide and like them all.
you really need to try em though. some people have a really hard time getting something they like which must be a pain in the... well you know.
i've had good saddles from WTB and selle italia too.

i'll keep an eye out for ya in CC...

+1 on the Armadillos. I ride to and from Brentwood (for work) and have yet to get a flat. Not sure if they come in red though...

Oh by the way, I really like those Langsters. Nice ride.
