80-year-old cyclist riding around Japan killed by truck just before reaching home

OTARI, Nagano -- An 80-year-old cyclist riding around Japan was hit by a truck in a tunnel just 20 kilometers away from his residence on Monday and died, police said.

Kamezaburo Harano was killed after being hit by a truck driven by a 22-year-old man in a tunnel on a national road in Otari, Nagano Prefecture.

Prefectural police investigators said that the area where the accident occurred was slightly curved, with one lane on each side of the road. There was lighting in the tunnel, and visibility was reportedly good. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.

Harano departed from Nagano Prefecture on his bicycle in April 2006. He had originally planned to arrive home on June 30 after circling Japan clockwise, starting from the Sea of Japan side.

The 58-year-old proprietress of an inn in Fukushima Prefecture where Harano had stayed said he had told her he was cycling around Japan on behalf of a fellow soldier in the war.

"He was wearing a T-shirt bearing the word 'Chinkon' (repose of the soul) in large letters. He told me, 'I'm going around on behalf of a fellow soldier who didn't experience youth,'" she said. (Mainichi)
