Mountain Biking - Am I stupid for thinking this?

I'm planning ahead about a year or so on my bike, and since the stupid frame isn't disc ready on it, but the forks are....I was thinking about just putting a disc on the front and leaving the back with V-brakes. I don't know if that's a great idea or not.

If i got a Avid BB5 or BB7 for the front, do I have to get all new brake levers or can I use my existing ones?

All the mechanical brakes, V-brake or disc brakes takes the same lever... it's not a bad idea ...

Could I use the same cable too?

Same kind, but you will need a new one, the current cable set up is too short to reach the caliper.

Just found a Mavic front disc rim for $20 used on the MMBA site (Michigan Mountain Biking Association) Idk, I might not get discs until x-mas, but this is a steal. I might have to jump on it.

Sometimes they can indeed be better than discs....

personally i use way more front brake than back brake no matter what kind of riding im doing, so i would do it in a heart beat. infact, im still debating the set up of my second bike, and that has crossed my mind many times because im in the same boat.

DOn't you also have to get new Hubs?

Hehe... I have disc front and canti rear. Works for me. :)

What was the link for muteseh? They're just adapters for different brands of discs.

I too run the avid bb5 up front and V-brake in the rear. Old GF frame with newer Judy fork, works great, saved a few $$.

you're the guy who wanted to upgrade his fork about a week ago. just a thought, but why didn't you just spend a little more on the front end? You'd end up way better. your LBS may even let you exchange your bike since you've only had it for like 2 weeks.

Yeah, a really bad, really poorly set up pair of discs. A simple set of Avid BB7's, correctly dialed in, with a 160mm rotor will smoke the best V brakes in power and modulation.

Agreed, but I think it is easier to correctly dial in vees than mech discs. And yes I have worked on discs. But hey, if you have the money/know how, definitely put the BB7s up front - I considered doing that but stuck with the vees ($$ issues) and they work wonderfully.

I think I'm going to do that because there's other things that i'd rather spend my money on (i.e. Fork) So this was a waste of a thread. But who knows, maybe i'll change my mind between now and then.
