Triathlon - Fitting with aero bars

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just got aero bars on my road bike... First time, so I have nothing to compare against. Would you change your fitting if planning to ride in aero a lot?

Yes, I did. My Soloist is set up with the seat post in the forward position and the seat slid a bit forward. A shorter stem as well. Depending on the details of your existing geometry many people find shorty aerobars work better than the full-length ones you'll see on a tri bike. My upper arms are close to vertical when my elbows are on the aerobar pads, allowing my skeleton to support my upper body weight instead of upper body muscle. A bike shop that does tri bike fits should know what upper body angles to measure to see if you have a good fit.
Check out the fitting articles on www.slowtwitch.com for ideas.
General suggestion for fitting aerobars on a standard road bike is the push the saddle further forward on the rails plus raise seat height to keep distance from bottom bracket the same.
