I am going to be riding Adventure Cyling's southern tier route which goes through the south(obviously). Has anyone ever ridden in the Miss, Louisiana area? I will be camping every night and I am scared ****less of gators! Any thoughts on how to avoid them?

Don't use a tarp go with a tent with a floor or better yet a hammock is ideal for swampy areas with snakes ,gators etc. Also if camping near a river avoid outward bends in the river with "slides " as these are gator paths.Better yet don't camp right on the water along canals, rivers, lakes etc. in gator prone areas.I toured through the "glades in southern Fl. last year and we saw many gators in the waterways while riding and they didn't appear particularly aggressive but I hear they can be if approached to closely during mating season.P.S. And as always hanging your food well away from camp helps keep your food safe and avoids attracting wild animals into your camp area.

I have a feeling the Adventure Cycling leader(s) know what they are doing and will be sure no one camps in a dangerous spot.

Your chance of 'gator attack is probably many many times less than your chance of mishap in an automobile.

Don't worry, be happy, and enjoy your trip.

Just take along your running shoes and wear them at night. Remember, you don't have to be able to outrun a gator--just be able to outrun the slowest member of your party.

Be very carefull, gators typically eat about 700 camping cyclist a year in southern states.

Gators have been known to travel up to three miles away from bodies of water to capture their prey, drag then back to the den (alive) and eat them over the course of several days.

But seriously, just stay away from the water, about 100 feet should do it.

Yes, they like a diet of lean, fit cyclists as it helps keep their colesteral down.

You guys are hilarious!

We have a whole lotta gators here in Mobile. Especially in the Delta, and recently with all of the rain/flooding they have actually started getting in neighborhoods, seriously. I have never heard of anyone getting hurt, but
they look ominous.

Now if you were in Australia, and dealing with crocs, you would have something to worry about.

Don't worry, be careful, and commonsense will take care of you.

Yeah. I think the only real risk is to dogs.
