It's official. I had to resort to getting a cortisone shot yesterday to try and kick a virus that became a sinus infection and then in short order became an upper respiratory infection. I was flat on my back all weekend running a fever and was still coughing up stuff, so yesterday morning I made a return visit to the doctor for something to kick start my recovery.

I had a round of tough intervals scheduled for the middle of last week right about the time that I felt like I might be having trouble fighting off something. I rode them but couldn't seem to get over the top on any of their power targets. (This is one of those times that training with power really can do a lot for you...if you are paying attention that is. Read on.) I emailed the CyclingPeaks file to my beloved CTS coach who promptly sent me an email saying that when your body isn't up to the challenge of a hard ride it will reject your attempts in spite you. He said it would have been a lot better just to back off at the start and try them another day when I was really ready. They wrung me out and the next day I woke up feeling like I had an instant cold. I kept riding to finish out the training week and the next thing that I knew I was coughing up little green dinette sets.

When I go back through my CyclingPeaks training stress data you can definitely see the build up in my training efforts, and the resulting progressive trend in the related training stress that it theoretically was putting on my body. It's one of the pretty cool features of CyclingPeaks once you learn how to use it. And apparently it works a lot better than just in theory. I got a pretty quick lesson in when I need to be careful and start to back off to give my body more of a chance to adapt and recovery properly.

So I am back on the bike for some easy trainer time once my lungs clear. Hopefully that will be later today. Some fun. At least I'm not missing out on any good riding weather.

Peace.
