what is a good conversion kit for a 8/9 sp shimano/sram compadable hub, this will be going on a specialized P.2 which has both a derailluer hanger and horizontal drop outs. i would imagine that since it has horizontal dropouts that it would not need a tensioner.

If your going singlespeed, just get a spacer kit. If you want fixed, you'll need a Surly hub.

For a single speed, yes.

I've had success with using stainless steel wedges under the pawls of a 3 pawl freehub body. It is holding up so far, and it was cheap and easy.

would a 34x16 be too easy or to hard, in a place like cape cod

i am now thinking 34x17 since that is a 2:1 ratio.
