I've had several instances lately where people, usually seems to be female driving and SUV but that's a sidenote, have tried to tell me I need to be on the sidewalk. My usual reaction is a middle finger maneuver or a hardy "where'd you get your license?" response. However, I've been thinking lately that maybe there's more that can be done to further the cause of cyclists everywhere and not cost a ton of money. One idea I've been toying with is visiting a shop like Kinkos and copying a letter to drivers that politely quotes the law, explains how cycling is more environmentally friendly, and how we aren't using up a lot of gas. Then placing these on windshields in local parking lots (with the businesses permission).

Any other ideas?

I prefer the environmentally friendly method: ignore them and keep riding.

Tree killer! No just kidding, sounds ok, just I used to hate it when people stuck papers on my windshield.

I hate it. If you want to make me hate bicyclists, sticking a piece of paper under my windshield wiper would do it!........Wait, I am a bicyclist......But I'd still hate it!

I like another suggestion I've heard on this board, but have not used yet because I hardly ever hear the sidewalk comment around here:

Yell back "Side what?"

I thought about that exact same thing. It's a little too much effort though to remember to carry papers every time I get on the bike...

I did cut out a portion of the bicycle-related info in the driver's manual though on a grocery store bulletin board; it lasted about 3 weeks before it was removed. I'm hoping at least one person read it...

Yell back "Side what?"

That's perfect! I didn't have a good retort for that before. I am proud of my retort to "You're not a car" though. It's, "You're not a genius."

I often ignore, but if I say anything, I just yell "IT'S ILLEGAL!" I don't like to flip birds at any motorists regardless of how deserving because I think it promotes acrimony between cyclists and motorists. If other motorists see you handle bad situations gracefully, you earn brownie points and consideration.

One of the great mysteries to me is that in all the years I've been riding, I've always wondered why yelled cycling advice has come exclusively from women. If men yell, it's it's some sort of idiotic phrase like FAAAGGG that's intended to goad rather than advice actually intended to be followed.

Earlier this year, some woman flagged me down on the highway (and I did stop for her), to tell me that cycling on the highway was illegal. I told her that while many people believe that, it is not true and informed her of what the law actually was. We had a surprisingly productive conversation and I discovered that she wasn't hostile to cyclists per se but didn't want to space out at the wrong time, hit me, and get sued out of existence. Her basic issue with me appeared to be that she thought I had a death wish.

My one and only such interaction was with a guy. I haven't heard anything from women but horns.

Yeah, dont flip her off, blow her a kiss instead. The reason she's telling you "you need to be on the sidewalk" is not because of her unfathomable concern for you and everyone elses safety, but because you are in her way and she is an impatient b'tch too wrapped up in her own selfishness to give a damn about anyone else but her and where she's going. So make no mistake about that.

If its a guy??.........Well,... you can 'flip him off', but make sure you can back it up. If you cant, then dont flip him off, just take the medicine he's giving you and then thank him for it.

Not trying to be mean to you friend, but you have to draw a line with them in the only language they understand.

Women give cyclists instructions because they want to run everybody else's life too. Never-mind that they are doing a great job of screwing up their own! :p

I have a really hard time with blowing kisses to people who are in the middle of showing their ***** (and not in a pleasant way :D ). It also really pisses me off even more when they are doing this in front of their children. I know there's probably not much that can be taught to someone as stupid as some of these people seem to be, but I'm not ready to give up yet. I still think there has to be a way to get the message out that cyclist belong on the road as much as these people in their freaking SUV's.

Come on man, we're talking about wimmens here. Can you really, and boldly "flip off" a woman in the full context of the act??

I mean,...... under clear blue skys,... with complete clarity, in the audience of the squirels in the trees, and the birds in the air,....viciously, and with a cold heart,..."flip off" a woman??

"Hell Yeah" I can!! :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

naw,,,seriously,...I think I would have a hard time with that. :D

....but a guy??........well now thats different!!
