I swapped the chainrings on my Elita crankset out for Shimano chainrings, but I didn't really think about how they should have gone on. Which side of the Shimano chainrings should face out?

I suppose the side with the writing on it?

the side with the recessed chainring bolt holes face out from the spider

You also need to line up the chain-drop pin with the crankarm, and the small ring oriented with the large one - but I'm not sure what markings are on yours to do that with.

Big ring tooth count stampings face out (right). All other Shimanos face left, toward frame.
