Road Bike Racing - I need an August race...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. OK. I want my Cat III upgrade....bad. I've been pushing Cat III wattages (at least in the 5 min and FTP area), but haven't had much success against the Texas 4's.
So, I want a change of pace. Preferably a stage race or something, but it has to be in August. I don't care where as long as it's not in...like... New York or Washington/Oregon (too far away).
Anyone got anything good? :D

Oh so tempting.... Hmmmmmm. Are there any crits up in that area around the same time?
The idea of going that far for one race is not jiving just yet, but i'm still tempted...

You can come get your ass handed to you for two straight weeks in Chicago/Milwauke in July.
^^^^SUPERWEEK.^^^^Literally two straight weeks of races, both crits and RRs.
Or, you can race Elk Grove and Downers Grove in the Chicago suburbs, two weekends in a row in August. The biggest money race of the year in the nation followed by the national crit championships.

Yeah, July is booked solid with races and family stuff, unfortunately. Thanks for the Chicago suggestion. I'll keep that in mind :).

Allanti Cycling Classic...Nashville, TN area
http://allanti.com/page.cfm?PageID=364
road race, time trial, criterium
I drove the wheel truck for the 4s last year and the course was great. The time trial is in historic Leiper's Fork Tn and the criterium is run in the parking lot of the Tennessee Titans stadium...
It will be a good race!

I hear you can do some Mississippi & Alabama races and just tear them up for easy upgrade points.

There's an omnium on the weekend of August 11th (one day in MS, one in AL). Linkie: http://www.lambra.org/calendar/2007/Meridian_Cuba_Challenge_07.pdf

That's pretty funny, right there.
Whatever you do, don't go to Colorado looking for quick points. Wonderful racing up there though :)

I'm not looking for "easy points", i'm just looking to get some more possibilities out there. I'm also graduating next Spring, and am wanting to have some results to where I can go to a good team.
Meh...

well, I have teammates who have first hand knowledge of the gulf state racing scene ;)
one hasn't really come close to winning anything in Georgia and has yet to lose in a cat 4 race in 'bama. I've also heard of other areas of the country that supposedly have a pretty weak race scene, but it's only hearsay and I'd probably get crucified if I mention them here :)

I said "quick" points, not "easy"!!!! I think it would be tough to go to Colorado for a couple days and do well. The altitude change with the stiff competition would be rough. You'd probably love doing a TT up there though -- it's much faster in the thin air :D
If you can get up there four or five days before the races, and just have some progressively tougher rides until you acclimate, you could probably have a lot of fun and do well. There are crits in Dillon and Frisco on 8/18 and 18/19, and another pair on the 26th and 26th.
You might check on transferring ACA points to USAC though. Colorado seceded from USCF in the 90s due to some big disagreement, and the ACA runs a couple states' racing now. Pretty funny since USAC is in Co. Spgs.
Here's the substantial calendar: http://www.americancycling.org/racing/schedule/colo/07-colo-page.htm
Will the state time trial in early August count? It's skill and age based and is just outside of Houston.

I'm actually doing that state TT, but the TTT event. I've got a group of club riders (one Cat 5) I've been cultivating who can all crack 19:15 on the 8-mile TT.
They're actually all really smooth in a paceline, so I'm encouraged. One of them is my daily training partner, so we know each other really well. I'll get a little more coaching in there and we should be good enough to suck :)
Funny that the only two of us with USAC licenses have hairy legs, and the other guys shave

A little off topic. To the Texans -- any thoughts on this September race: http://www.txbra.org/events/event.asp?EventID=1442 . I may make my long anticipated return to the racing scene here. Any of you do the crit last year.

I've never done that one, but I may this year :)

Not sure how true this is as this is my first year racing and I'm only a 5. Although here in AL we don't have many teams/races, the races in MS seem to always draw teams from MS, LA and TN with some pretty strong riders. Here we don't really have many races or teams but I wouldn't say the guys are EASY by any stretch...

I'm not knocking any particular region, but some areas are going to be stronger than others. Or rather, some areas are known for their races. NorCal and CO for RRs, the MidWest for crits. And, having raced in a wide variety of settings now, I can say that those "stereotypes" are there for a reason; they bear a resemblence to reality.
