98% of the time I stop. I'll roll through if I'm in a more country-type area.

No you aren't. If you were, you wouldn't have used them (or would have edited them out).
Ok, what about running the crossing lights when they are blinking the do not cross symbol?

I never run red lights, unless it's late at night and I can't get the light to change. I do come to a complete stop at all lights and (most) stop signs, though, and make damn sure no one's coming before I proceed. There's no sense in dying of stupidity.

I stop if there is significant traffic flowing or its a really big intersection. If theres a car coming but its a block or 2 away Im going through. Living in the city most of the intersections are really small and Im across the street before you can count to 3.

VPR

if its clear, run through, doesnt matter to me, a light or a stop sign, but slow down for lights obviously, because unless you live in a village there are almost always cars on the road

Here's a *great thread* for all those who would have us believe cyclists running red lights is some disproportionate urban safety threat.

And I didn't dig into some archive for this. It happened yesterday.

Edit: There is no swearing censor on the site I linked to.

The only way I will run a red light (left turn) is if I have stopped at the red and it cycles once and it still won't turn for me. I make sure that no one is coming, supposedly it's legal if you let the light cycle once and it still won't turn for you. The regular red lights where I'm going straight, I ALWAYS stop. I have seen to many close calls and don't want to become road kill. I don't care if it kills my average speed, better killing that then me!

I stop for the lights I come to. Some are just won't change so I'll go when it's clear.

side note, it's always been a sticking point with me, many people I know personally who are adamant about drivers giving bicyclists the same rights on the road as other cars, will ride right through a red light or other things that you can't/won't/shouldn't do in a car, my view is that if you want all the rights, you take all the responsabilities that go with them, and that means stopping at red lights and stop signs, no shooting through a parking lot because it's shorter etc. Can't have it both ways.

My philosophy is keep my eyes open and don't argue lane right with old ladies in buicks, Buick trumps schwinn any day.

Can't have it both ways.I'm sorry, but you're advocating the adult view. :p

Like many, I only run reds under special circumstances.

If sensors won't trip then I'll do it. The method is probably the key issue here. I do it as if I were a pedestrian trying to cross a road with no pelican or zebra crossing facilities. It's never infallible, but The Green Cross Code has kept generations of pedestrians alive and much safer.

Other circumstances include clearing the path of oncoming emergency vehicles and threats of violence. These aren't done lightly and I'd prefer not to. I only do it when it is obviously the safest course of action. The rule still stands that I never look for an excuse to run lights.

Actually, I'll also do it in utter immovable gridlock. After all, if the lights aren't actually controlling traffic, are they really traffic lights at all? Besides, who wants to be near the path of a frustrated driver who is more concerned about making progress than the safety of those around them. Not right but I think arguably reasonable.

...Everybody bends em and even breaks em...

Which makes it all rather subjective, yes?

For what it's worth, I occasionally run stop lights, especially to turn right-on-red, which is illegal here. Someday I'll probably get a stiff ticket and come running to this forum to complain about it.

I've got an even simpler solution. Pete and Sandwarrior take their little morality debate elsewhere. No one here wants to hear about it.

Actually, I'm wading through this thread for the second time - wallowing in my reactions which warm and cool one way, then the other, based on the degree to which some resort to hyperbole to support their point of view.

Who are you to police this thread and decide who wants to hear about what? If you don't want to "hear" about it, close your ears (or your browser). Allow the rest of us to make up our own minds about what we want to hear about, ok?

In a word, no. Except for left turns (in UK, we can't turn left at a red stop sign like USA guys can turn right). It's stupid and wastes time, so I'll only ever run a stop sign when turning left if it's safe to do so.

I think you meant 'yes'.

Why stop when no cars are coming? Getting comfortable with going on greens, made me pay less attention to actual traffic because I would just focus on the light. After nearly being t-boned by someone running a red light at 40mph, now I give almost all my attention to the traffic, only using lights as a guideline. I know when it's safe to go, and will go when it is. I will never get hit by a car while running a red because it is only ever the product of a complete understanding of my surroundings.

What can I say? I am just plain better than everyone who is in a car, and therefore it is my special privilege to ignore traffic controls.

Not that I want to open this can of worms again, but Donna is a moderator, and was repsonding to reports made by members that had been reading this thread.

Then she should say so. Posting "No one here wants to hear about it," is neither correct nor an appropriate way to express the whiners' -- er, complainers' -- displeasure.

I wonder how many pictures the cops throw away of those cyclists caught speeding through intersections where there are cameras? :)

Personally, It depends on the time of day and where I'm riding.....if it's a busy intersection and there's a light, of course I'll stop for the duration and then proceed on green.....but if it's at a slow time of day and obviously no cars around, I'll stop and then proceed when safe.....a cyclist can hear better and generally see better and can use better judgement on when to proceed than someone in a car with the radio blaring and engine rattling....

. . . . and the windows rolled up tight and the AC going full blast.

I wonder how those who maintain the position that those of us who will run a red light when no other traffic is around amounts to some moral trepidation bordering on anarchy handle turn signals. If you are turning right, left, stopping, do you always signal, signal only when there is traffic with which to communicate, never signal, which?

If you don't signal when there is no traffic (the law states in most jurisdictions that you should always signal), just because . . . well, there is no traffic, should that be considered moral trepidation on the same level as sliding through a stop sign or a stop light when there is no traffic?

Just curious if rule book thumpers hit all sides of the good book with equal force.

If the absolutists did that then they would be, heaven forbid, consistent, something that zealots can rarely be accused of.

I'm glad that I will be burning in hell for running stop signs, I don't think I could stand being around the sanctimonious stop sign nannies in heaven.

I always run stop signs, it's pointless not to. If there are cars approaching i slow or stop, depending on where i am and where they are the moment.
