Just lost the rear rim on my 92 Santana Rio. Spokes appear to have pulled and torn the alloy. Hub, Freewheel and Drum brake seem ok. I'm looking for an economical repair and am having trouble locating 40 spoke 26" rims. Any suggestions for rim suppliers or for inexpensive wheels? The Tandem has many miles on it and really needs a complete rebuild to restore it to its original condition so it doesn't seem to make sense to pour alot of money in it when the low end new ones are only around $800.

Shouldn't be too hard. 40 hole Ryno Lites are in the QBP catlogue and I even checked stock and they're available. Relatively economical too. Most any LBS should be able to order one for you.

Rhyno Lites are very tough but not the easiest rim to mount a tire on. If all of your riding is on the road they might be a little overkill.

And I thought I was being funny usng 130mm spacing with 700c wheels and 36 spokes. Anyway, I agree with Zonatandem's take on 40-spoke wheels and 160 spacing, but more from the perspective that Santana tends to seriously overbuild its tandems. But then, my tandem carries no racks or bags.

I find that reading posts is a really dumb way to communicate. No inflection, too subject to the reader's perspective/assumptions, and I really, really dislike emoticons. So I always give posters a break because I have found that they almost never mean what you think they mean in the way you think they're saying it.

OP wants to know how to get his failed rear wheel fixed cheaply. Telling him that it was overbuilt in the first place, even if true, simply isn't very helpful.

Have to admit that my riding is offroad- but MY feeling is that I wouuld rather use overkill on weight and strength on wheels- than have a wheel fail on me at speed. Now as to the mounting of tyres on the rhino lites- That is a tight rim.

I used the rhino lites and could not destroy them- they were good but 2,000 miles of Offroading with V Brakes and the brake area got too thin for comfort. Now have disc brakes.

You make a valid point.

Incidentally, I wish that I had said this earlier, but I think that you'll get a whole lot better bike by spending $800.00 to refurbish and upgrade a '92 Santana Rio than you will spending the same nmoney on a new entry level tandem.
