Recreational & Family - Trail Of the Hiawatha's

I am planning on taking a drive to Idaho/Montana next month to ride the Trail of the Hiawatha's and Look Out Pass trail and I want to camp, but I am having a heck of a time finding anything near by that is not an RV campground. I am used to primitive camping if need be but would like at least bathroom facilities on the premise and somewhere around 10 miles from the trail head (I plan on starting at the Pearson end of it. DOes anyone one have any suggestions? Thanx in advance

I believe that the N.F. St. Joe River campground (was Squaw Cr. Campground) on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests is within 10 miles of the Pearson trailhead. Let me get back to you tomorrow with more details after I have a chance to check out my map at work. It's an easy but fun ride with the trestles and tunnels. Another rails to trails project in the area that has just opened up is the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. The North Fork St. Joe Campground is on Forest Road 456 about 6-7 miles south of Pearson. I've attached a clip from the forest visitor's map showing it's location relative to the trail and surrounding area. You'll note that there are a couple of other campgrounds in the area as well - Loop Cr and Cliff Cr. As far as I know both of these are undeveloped sites. Hope this helps...

Thanks that helps a lot looks like there are a couple of campgrounds in the area. ANd thanks for the link to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene there is a ton of cool oinfo on that site. I had chedked out both trails official sites but the freinds site is the best. A co workerd did the Coeur d'Alene a couple of weeks ago and had a blast I may do some of that on the road bike while I am over there. And welcome to the forums you sare going to like it here
