Framebuilders - Can this De Rosa Frame be saved (pics) ?

I had a crash several days ago that damaged the top tube of my 2002 De Rosa Merak. The frame is still straight. I already inquired in another forum about repairing an aluminum frame. Apparently, unlike steel or CF, aluminum frames are harder to fix. This frame has some sentimental value to me and I'd like to realistically know what you think about its fate. Personally, I think its worth saving if it can be repaired. Thanks in advance.

It can be fixed, however you are going to have to send it to a custom frame builder who can place it in a jig to keep the alignment correct as the top tube is replaced. There are strength concerns, and depending on the millage, wear concerns as well. It'll take a long time, finding a builder willing to take it on may be a challenge, and I expect that the repair will be as much if not more than the value of the frame.
I think you may find it easier, quicker and likely cheeper to strip the parts, buy a new frame, and hang that one on the wall.

I'd agree with that. Repairs are rough on Al, even simple alignments. mainly due to the heat treating/artificial aging process that happens after the welding. figure out the cost of the repair + heat treating + paint. I doubt it will be cheaper than buying new.

Just a thought.... what about roughly do a body shop work sort of type.. allign the frame the best possible and use carbon fiber to strenght the area? just paint over.. done!... just a tought...
