I'm thinking of riding to Gettysburg to the campgrounds where my in-laws are staying this weekend. Some of the roads (MD-26, MD-97) I know have good shoulders. Some (MD-140) don't really have shoulders and I'm a bit skeptical of riding on and will likely find a work around. The PA roads I don't know at all. Can someone please let me know what the traffic and shoulders on Waynesboro Pike (PA-16) and Fairfield Road (PA-116) are like?
Thanks in advance.
Mike
Sounds like a sweet ride.
Here (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Mike-to-Gettysburg) is an option.
It is based on roads that I have driven. I have a client out in Keymar. Pretty much all of the small roads in Western CC have no shoulder. But nobody lives out there either. It was also based on a Thurmont to Gettysburg ride I found on motionbased.

As well as a ride I did out that way.

Even Rt 140 west of Westminster is fine. It becomes 2 lanes with a shoulder, much like Rt. 26.
When are you going? If the times worked out I would even consider riding part of it with you.

Cool. I'll have a look at those and route out my final plan if I do this ride. We were thinking of going to visit either today or tomorrow. If we go today I probably won't ride since I'm about to head out the door to go with some HoCo folks. If we plan on going tomorrow I'll give you a shout.

Cool. I am going to try and ride later today. But for now I have to start demo in the kitchen (new countertops.)

I ride Rt 15 (Catoctin Mountain Highway) all the time. I start just north of Frederick (Walkersville) and ride all the way to Thurmont. Awesome bicycle road! 10-12 ft shoulder, rumble strip. signage and high visibilty. Totally safe. I don't know what happens to 15 between Thurmont and Gettysburg though.
