how do i remove that ring inside holding the bearing in place?

If you have a grip-nut headset (which I am assuming you do since the threadless type just slides right out), there should be a slit in the conical shaped ring. Use your fingernail or a small screwdriver an unscrew it. It helps to pry it open a little since it may have gotten contaminated over time.
As long as you greased your threads when you installed, it should come out with only a little coaxing.

don't, if it gives you resistance, don't **** with it. WD-40, let dry, grease, reassemble, ride.

You actually use WD-40 on your bike? WTF is wrong with you?
Ignore the above advice and degrease with a degreaser, do not use WD-40 anywhere near your bike.

You may service your Chris King headset while in the frame using a light solvent based lubricant (e.g., Bullshot aerosol or WD-40,) to flush the bearings. If you have access to the correct tools for the proper removal and reinstallation of Chris King bearing cups, we have found it easier and more effective to remove the cups and use a solvent tank.
