$65 for some knock-off Vans? Also, it's kind of a bummer that
they don't appear to be American made, since that's seem to be
such a point-of-pride for their bags.

i think they're supposed to be more than just a pair of vans, like specially suited to riding or something


The Chrome Milo features a vulcanized multi-directional, natural rubber sole for exceptional grip and durability; loose-lined stitching for ventilation and to reduce the amount of glue used; an injection-molded heel "slam pad" for optimal heel cushion and high impact absorption; an a-symmetrical toe wrap that protects high wear areas; and a custom-designed foot bed for heat transfer and comfort.

According to Mark Falvai, co-founder of Chrome, "Outside of the graphics, there's very little thought that goes into most slip-ons. Most brands just use off-the-shelf molds from factory show-rooms."

nothing about that description sounds any different than vans slip-ons ... or other random skate oriented slip ons. The most obvious cycling friendly detail would have been a stiff(er than normal) midsole, which these obviously do not have, judging from the photo.

The only substantial difference (from vans) would appear to be the toe cap:

While not on vans, it is extremely common on nearly all skate shoes.

Doesn't seem like anything special to me. Too bad. I really do love my Chrome bag.

What they should have done is taken some of the design features of the 5.10 Impact shoes (a genuinely well thought out cycling shoe for flat pedals) and adapted into a hipster-friendly design.

Them's the NACCc shoes. They janky.

May be worth it, may be not. The whole reason I like Converse/Vans slip-ons is that they're cheap, don't have a ton of ****ty graphics on 'em, and don't have laces to get caught in your clips. I might pay a little more for a stiffer sole but that's about it.

Oh and they're vegan. Chrome's obviously aren't.

I got a pair during the naccc's, my picture is on their web site for the shoes putting the shoes in my bag for the quailfiers. They are wider then vans, they do feel better in clips then vans, I wish they had a stiff sole. they are comfortable but ugly. I almost flipped them on ebay the day I got them.

I run beat MTB nylon clips and it gets sore where they bite my instep (which is huge and sensitive to that sort of thing), I've tried metal single gate clips and I don't like them, not as torsionally secure IME.

Nonetheless my freak-feet don't like braking with vans on.

What's in a name?

i'm a little bit of a slip-on fiend, and so far i've found the etnies version to be the most comfortable, although it's certainly not the most durable. slightly wider than vans, thinner-looking but more supportive sole, better stretch design.

i haven't bought a pair of puma el reys yet, but they're comfy when i've tried them on in stores.

as posted above, one of the advantages of slides is the replaceability. it doesn't hurt the wallet to have two pairs at once if you get 'em for $30 or less.

they're not the most innovative shoe out there, but who really cares? If you really wanted a pair of stiff, snug, low profile shoes for clips, you wouldna be rocking vans. They're a compromise, just like wearing regular pants, a cotton t shirt, carrying your gear on your back is a compromise. F@ckin everything about stylin track bikes is a compromise, from the NOS 1lb perforated Supercorsa to 120PSI 23mm tires for crappy potholed city streets.

if and when you ride these in the rain, they take like 2 days to dry out. at least with the canvas ones.

aside from that, they seem to do what theyre supposed to.

Definitely. I got a pair of the black/black suede ones, and while they're nice comfortable shoes, I don't like riding in them at all. They're too soft and too loose, even though I sized them right. If I'm going to ride on my bike with clips, I'll wear my Sambas instead.

Lace em in, tie the ends at the eyelet and cut the excess off. Instant slip ons w/better grip and a bit more narrow than regular Vans slip ons.
