Road Cycling - How many patches?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
How many times can you (should you) patch an inner tube before you should just toss it?

i have a buddy that has 47 patches on his MTB tube.
personally on my race wheels i only run new tubes and save the patches for backup wheels and even then i dont usually patch more than 2 times.

I used to patch my mountain bike tubes maybe five times. I don’t patch my road tubes. I just keep a bunch of spares around.
