Where did this take place? Are there signs saying that cyclists are not allowed? Is there a minimum speed limit on the road or are other slow moving vehicles allowed?

<bangs head against the wall in bemused frustration of that level of ignorance even from a rookie>

Filing a complaint was definitely the right move, and it may save someone else alot of unnecessary hassle.

I'd love to hear more detail about this incident.
What exactly was on the sign that prompted the cop to take away the bike.
Why did the cop take away the bike - is that a prescribed remedy for riding a bike in a bike-prohibited zone anywhere?
. . . if you make a mistake in your car and are cited for an infraction, do they take the car away from you on the strength of that lone infraction?
Tell us more, please (glad the bike was returned in good condition).

Bicycles are usually exempt from this unless it is a limited access freeway or there are other ordinances in effect. In NC there is a minimum posted speed limit on many highways but by NC traffic code bicycles are exempted.

The only roads that I've ever seen that have minimum speed limits are limited access freeways. The only state that I know of that has a minimum speed law on the books in Ohio, although many other states do have impeding traffic laws. In either case, a minimum posted speed limit is a lot different in terms of how it affects cyclists.
Do you have the NC law handy to post?
