Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello

I will be moving to Long Island for a short time (4 months) from Sweden for an internship. I hope to commute to work (about 6 miles, so it's short), but I will need a bike.

Where is the best place to buy a used bike? I would like something cheap, like a simple single speed, or an older racer. I'm fairly confident in being able to check the condition of a bike, but I could spend a little more money to buy a used bike from a good lbs, just to be sure that everything is checked up, since I wont have all my usual tools with me.

Also, will I need to buy studded tires? I will be working until the beginning of november. I'm not sure how the weather is in Long Island that time of year.

Thanks for any help

It may be difficult to find a bike shop that has any used bikes for sale. Craigslist.org is a good place to look.

I suggest you don't buy any studded tires-- i'm pretty sure it doesn't snow in Long Island in early novemeber.

I moved this thread to Northeast Regional and changed the title a bit in hopes some Long Islanders or nearby New Yorkers could assist you.

Ill try to find somewhere that sells used bikes but that may be hard. I know of

http://www.recycleabicycle.org/retail

but they are in brooklyn and manhatten.

As far as weather. You should be fine on regular tires. We don't get much snow here although the weather does whatever it wants here. It may snow an inch or 2 and be completely melted and sunny the next day.

Try propertyroom.com. make sure you are buying from the LI warehouse, otherwise not worth it. I believe there is a nice park for riding near the warehouse. Bethpage Park?
