Classic & Vintage - Had to tell someone

Guy I work with gave me two bikes. One was a Murray 10 speed department store bike, no big deal. The other one was (is) a Concord Pacer S/S. The date on the bottom of the seat says "11/01/1976" so I am guessing it's the original seat AND that's close to the assemble date. My brother took one look and decided he wanted it so I am fixing it up. There is no alloy on the bike, all components and the rims are steel. Quite a bit of rust as well.

I took the rusty pits and gave them a bath in Iron Out (works great!!). The seat has rust on the springs and other chrome metal bits on the seat. I don't think I can do anything about it without ruining the seat itself. All of the bearings had hardened grease but they were still serviceable so I did a clean and repack.

The bike won't be an a-1 looker, but I think my brother will like it. Hopefully I can run into a halfway decent parts bike or find some parts at a swap meet and make it look perfect. Until then my brother will be loving it regardless.

That was not a ramble, that was an admission that you belong to C & V :D ! The Concord Pacer sounds as if it is a boom bike era baby. If I remember the thread correctly, Concord was produced by Kuwahara under the Concord name.

You might want to think about switching out the steel rims for some alloy wheels. Stopping distances increase dramatically when the steel rims get wet.

Well, first, I am a moron..forgot to take pictures of the bike "before." I will have pics up as soon as it's back together. Right now it's parted in the garage. Just picture a LOT of brown on all of the chrome bits...yeah, that's it.

The only part I am not touching, as I said, is the seat. I hope I can find something suitable for a replacement.

Sounds like rust issues. Check out the oxalic acid threads! We'll be waiting for the photos.

East Hill

When I got this bike, there was NO chrome on it. All was rust. The frame was grease. The shifters, brakes, oh, the whole damn thing was a mess. I think I got a little over 10 hours in it. Just got her done this afternoon.

I have the handlebar tape on order and once it's done, that's it. My LBS couldn't get "gumwalls" so we went with 70PSI blackwall Kenda. The only part of the rustbucket that wasn't reused was one brake cable, the chain, and a rear dérailleur. The rust came off via "Iron Out" but unfortunately there was some finish that was just too far gone. Notice the seat is untouched. I think I might ruin the seat if I try to get the rust off. BTW, the springer seat rides GREAT!!!

This chainring was completely rusted out. The bolts didn't come out too well. In fact, one of the bolts broke completely off. I took one off of an old chainring I had laying around. It's the one bolt that ISN'T still showing deterioration.

The handlebar neck was one big ball of rust. After I got the rust off via a good soaking, there was no chrome left. It's going to be a rider, so no worries.

The SunTour Honor was rusty. I soaked it, but it had some of the finish taken off as a result. My wife rides a 20 year old Huffy that I put a Suntour Honor on years ago. Well, I pulled it today and put it on ths bike. The cassette was sticky and noisy. I hosed it down with brake cleaner, then dripped 80w90 oil through the back and let it run out the other side until it was "Oil" and not "rusty" oil. Seems to work fine now. While the cassette was off, the spoke guard, which was ALL rust, got a good soaking as well. Notice it's still pitted, but at least it's chrome.

The stickers look good here, but the one of the "P"'s is coming off. Any ideas??

Of course, no pics can show the complete disassembly of the wheels, fork, and crank. The chainwheel alone took a LOT of time, soaking, disassembly, etc. All of the grease on this bike was hard as a rock.
