I bought a Pista track bike (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=315126) earlier this week. I've been putting some decent miles on it and I decided that I was comfortable enough on the bike for some time at the velodrome. The local velodrome is Alpenrose, which has the highest bank in the US at 43 degrees.

I was there for 2 hours. I'm not going to lie, I couldn't stay on the bank for the first 1:40. It was ridiculously intimidating: 43 degrees is intense to even look at. I circled the track probably 100 times before I almost gave up. Finally, I held the line and *zing* it was all over after that. I increased the pace and did dozens of laps. The trick was to envision my line and stay on course. It wasn't that bad once I successfully completed the first lap but it was honestly a challenge to take that leap of faith and trust that my tires would hold. At the apex of the curve, I could feel the centrifical force pulling me down. Blood rushes from the head. Adreneline flows. The experience was surreal. I used to race downhills bikes but in truth this was scarier.

The Pista is stock save for my pedals and a front brake. It was amazing what a $500 bike could do on the track. I was totally impressed.

What kind of speeds do you need to hold to comfortably take one of those embankments?

I ride at Calshot, which I believe is 42 degrees. Once the initial shock is over you dont even notice the steepness when your flying along in a line at 30+. First time I went I had to spiral up the track lap by lap increasing my speed to get used to the banking, and by the end of the day i was usin the entire width of the track to gain momentum for flying laps. In other words, it wont take long to get over the banking.

Pretty bike. Glad you figured out how to ride the embankments!

...seriously though... I hate the look of most Bianchis, but that's nice!

Did they make you take that brake off the front or were you out there by yourself?

Nice looking bike, and a great looking track. Funny it doesn't look as steep as Calshot, maybe the straights are longer ? Calshot was the old London 6 day track with a couple of sections cut out of the straights

That's what the website said but I was doing minimum of 20 mph. I didn't trust myself at a slower speed. I am wussy.

I was there solo before sunset. For races, it needs to be off.

Good looking track. Alpenrose is outdoors and I believe 268 Meters.

What gear ratio are you running? Just curious :)

48x16T. 79 gear inches. It was perfect for the track but sucks for hills.
